That's the absolute best advice that can ever be offered to anyone updating their unit imo. Add to that to ALWAYS do a files backup, a Non Volatile backup (most importantly), and then a hard reset (or better still clear NV) both before and after updating firmware and you should never be left with a bricked or strangely acting device. Use a pendrive to update maps instead of Nuvi. Just copy Garmin folder in pendrive and run Mapupdater3.1.2. then copy files in Nuvi. Safer
