I've never found the lifetime map updater to work at all! Just sits there and never notifies me of anything. The way I've tended to do it is via MyGarmin. Click on the latest map and it installs something-or-other and the map downloads and installs. We have a new Europe map out officially soon, I believe so I'll probably try Garmin Express to download that and see how it goes.

I do find GE works well for installing latest firmware and gives me the option of installing the latest voice files, so I've nothing against it. I do however detest BaseCamp!

I have no idea is MyDashboard works! All I've ever seen on both my Garmin's over several PC's and different OS is the "Communicating with device - this should take a few seconds" screen for however long I let it try (an hour yesterday) before I give up. If the Garmin is out of warranty and you install firmware Garmin say you should have, surely it's down to Garmin to sort if their update bricks an out of warranty unit?

I wouldnt like to have back a refurbished unit and ,in case of out of warranty device ,you should pay for shipment.
It can happen to brick a nuvi, especially if using it for testing stuffs on forum, but I try to avoid it. Mine and forumers experiences make me use some preventive measures.
Never read about "Nuvi stuck at loading maps" ?
Never udate firmwares and addition like voices texts etc at the same time.
Never update firmwares with on line methods, if you dont have a stable connection.
Use a pendrive to update maps instead of Nuvi. Just copy Garmin folder in pendrive and run Mapupdater3.1.2. then copy files in Nuvi. Safer
    And.......long life to your devices

You have to navigate to get to the good.

That's the absolute best advice that can ever be offered to anyone updating their unit imo. Add to that to ALWAYS do a files backup, a Non Volatile backup (most importantly), and then a hard reset (or better still clear NV) both before and after updating firmware and you should never be left with a bricked or strangely acting device. 'Prevention is better than cure' .... but thank goodness for Cure3 from Kunix.
