    In my Etrex 30 I can have as many map images I want, as long as its a garmin image with img extension. it's not necessary to name them gmapsupp.img, you can use descriptive name as long as you keep an img extension

    True .. but only up to certain points which most users probably won't encounter. Firstly, the individual *.img files need to be under 4GiB to satisfy the FAT32 file size limit (for FAT 16 that's 2Gib minus 1 byte). Then there is the amount of individual tiles that the unit can handle, in old models that's 2025, but new units can handle in excess of 4000 tiles. Neither the 4GiB or tile limitations are likely to be reached by most users with 'normal' maps.

    The big stopper is usually the amount of individual MapIds which i think is around 16 or thereabouts. So if you were to load up a big card, say 32GiB, with lots of different small maps then not all will be seen by the unit.

    @IGNATRON
    Point taken. A lot of the earlier info is quite misleading [wrong or simply out of date]. When i get time i'll do a summary for current situation for the common devices' usage of maps on SD/microSD and put a link in Post #1.

    When threads get as long as this one, i find it helpful to read the first page or so, skip to the last page and then work forwards & backwards until you get the relevant info [a bit like building a bridge, but hopefully you can stop before you meet in the middle, lol!]. Thanks for your constructive comment.

    @Scher
    What you have there is definitely not recommended. Your eTrex only supports the NT component of CX not the MMR (EPM) component so there is no Enhanced Pedestrian Mode available anyway so pointless if you already have the CN for that city. Additionally, units not supporting MMR shouldn't have more than one cx region loaded at a time:
    Code:
    Please Login or Register to see the links
    From CX map Features tab:
    Features enhanced pedestrian navigation, which makes it easy to get around town via public transportation - walking, train, tram, bus, subway, taxi or a combination of options - on compatible devices¹ (Not all forms of public transportation are available on all cityXplorer products)
    ¹Adding cityXplorer maps to a unit that does not support enhanced pedestrian navigation ONLY will allow for viewing of cityXplorer maps and points of interest and is not recommended if the city already is preloaded to your device. Only 1 region can be downloaded directly to devices that do not support pedestrian navigation. Additional regions can be downloaded to individual data cards.
    Link:
    Code:
    Please Login or Register to see the links
    Further, you are mixing versions of CN by having 2014.10 and 2014.20 together which almost certainly will cause conflicts. Also 3D buildings isn't supported by your unit.

    Hi all! I have a Garmin Nuvi 1390T with Europe base map 2012.10 on internal System memory, there I also copied Romania map and it works. In a 8gb microsd card I put Europe NT 2014.20 map named as gmapsupp.img. I would like to add others maps on the SD card but I didn't managed to do correctly for example naming them as gmapprom etc.. or creating a Map folder in the root directory of the sd (i have no sufficient space on internal memory because if I cancel preinstalled map then nothing works). What I must do to have one more map working on the sd along with the Europe one? (I will put Italy 2014.20, and all maps are unlocked). Thank you.

    You only need one Full Europe Map in your Nuvi
    Delete all other detailed maps of Europe in your Nuvi and and SD card, make a folder called /Map on your SD Card (do not delete gmapbmap.img this is the basemap)
    (do not delete gmaptz.img this is the timezone map)
    Copy the full Europe Map to this folder. Name it anything you like .img e.g. CN_EU_2014_20.img or gmapsupp.img or even fabioxp79.img
    Now you will have all countries of Europe including Italy and Romania
    Having duplicate detailed maps of the same coverage can cause problems in routing search etc.
