Default How to relocate Garmin maps to any disk on XP/Vista/W7

How to relocate Garmin maps to any unit on XP/Vista/W7 (can be USB flash or DVD - slow but works)

First Install BaseCamp (if not already installed).
This will give you the .NET and C++ objects needed by BaseCamp and HomePort.
You will also get USB drivers for Garmin devices.

Download BaseCamp from garmin.com (select support -> software -> Mapping Programs)

Start a command prompt for the sample commands below.

Create a new folder for relocated maps (i.e. "Garmin maps")

mkdir "E:\Garmin maps"

Copy DLL files for BaseCamp to new folder

Copy "%ProgramFiles%\Garmin\BaseCamp\*.dll" "E:\Garmin maps\"

Copy HomePort.exe and pathched versions of MapSource.exe & BaseCamp.exe to "E:\Garmin maps\"
Download exe-files - HomePort(2.0.4) and patched versions of MapSource(6.16.3) & BaseCamp(3.1.2)

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Create a subfolder "Maps"

mkdir "E:\Garmin maps\Maps"

Copy map folders to "E:\Garmin maps\Maps" (i.e. "City Navigator Europe NT 2011.20.gmap")
Newer maps are in a folder ending with ".gmap", and by default installed in "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\GARMIN\MAPS"

i.e. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\GARMIN\MAPS (in XP)
C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Maps (in Vista/W7)

MapSource, BaseCamp and HomePort will find those maps in the subfolder "Maps" - no need for registry changes.
The original maps can be deleted from %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\GARMIN\MAPS.
You now need to unlock all locked maps - enter unlock info i Notepad(see sample below)

<List xmlns="http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/UnlockCodes/v1">

<Unlock>

GMG7F232LKTWCCF95WXGSVQAW3

BCATL

</Unlock>

<Unlock>

2BBGM4ZB7MHQQQ2F53QBBHPMF

CNEU2

</Unlock>

<Unlock>

3GD5QNTQZF5T6KJHJGGHGG59D

TOPOSF

</Unlock>

</List>

(The codes and UnitID is only a sample - does not work)
Save As - position to "E:\Garmin maps\Maps\" - select encodig UTF-8 and File name UnlockCodes.ucx
Put the file name(UnlockCodes.ucx) within quotes(") to have the correct suffix "ucx" instead of default "txt".
(If you have a working installation copy from %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps\UnlockCodes.ucx)

For older maps, you still have to edit registry - create a regedit file "maps.reg" with Notepad

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Families\BlueChart Atlantic 2008.5]
"ID"=hex:63,01
"IDX"="F:\\Garmin maps\\Maps\\BCATL105\\Tides_Marinas\\atltides_marinasv20085.mdx"
"MDR"="F:\\Garmin maps\\Maps\\BCATL105\\Tides_Marinas\\ATLTides_Marinasv20085_MDR.img"

Nice idea. Actually it can be done even simpler.

Prepare directory for maps, just like you have described, name and drive are example only:
mkdir "E:\Garmin maps"

Create a subfolder "Maps"
mkdir "E:\Garmin maps\Maps"

Right click on Mapsource or BaseCamp icon or position in start menu and then choose "Properties"

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

In dialog window fill "Start in" field with name of your new directory:

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Now copy all gmap folders you'd like to have on this drive into "E:\Garmin maps\Maps" directory.
For unlocking maps simply use Mapsource or BaseCamp menu:
Utilities/Tools -> Manage Map Products -> Unlock Regions -> Add.

Yes you are right Kanopus,
but by copy *.dll and *.exe files as described, you have a portable installation.
The directory ("E:\Garmin maps\Maps") can be on removable media (USB flash or even DVD) and be used/moved to any PC.
At least MapSource will run - maybe you need to install BaseCamp to get .NET and C++ objects if you want to use BaseCamp/HomePort.
If you only need MapSource you can download the USB drivers from Garmin(garmin.com -> Support -> Software -> Additional Software -> USB Drivers)

Here another option: it's also possible to copy and leave your map gmap folder in any other path in any HD.
It will be enough to create a shortcut in C\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps\....( Vista>>W7>>W8 path)
This is valid for any HD even for removable ones
Screen:
[hide]
9qhett

s4azwk

1060ccn
[/hide]

To create a Shortcut to a File or Folder in Windows 7
Open the drive or folder containing the file or folder in which you want to create a shortcut.
Right-click the file or folder, and then click Create shortcut.
To change the shortcut’s name, right-click the shortcut, click Rename from the shortcut menu, type a new name, and then press Enter.
Drag the shortcut to the desired location.

Bye,bye

To have a map in Mapsource you dont need to install it, you just need the gmap folder or its shortcut in C\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps\
This since all the latest Mapsource version. Installer is optional and if you want to have entries in registry

to install?
well, nothing to 'install', just simply place (copy, move) .gmap where you like, and tell Mapsource and Basecamp that place with a shortcut.
for .img you use removable drive, real as well as virtual usb-drive, even virtual HD works - Basecamp finds them there.

Fully compiled *.img files usable by your device are not visible to MS, only BC and HomePort (for marine maps). Maybe typo, did you mean 'HomePort and BaseCamp finds them there'?
