So, basically here is one of the available cure methods. It just forces entering the mass storage mode.

But can you test this one for me at first? I don't know how it works with dakota. It does the same thing but it doesn't require full firmware flashing.

Thanks but I don't know how, or even if it's possible, to put the Dakota into pre-boot mode which I believe I would need to do first to get this to work, correct? I've searched and while there are plenty of instructions on how to put Nuvi's and some other models into pre-boot, I haven't found any instructions for the Dakota or Oregon units.
