It really helps to put the correct version of the ASR files on the garmin... for some reason I put the 2011.10 ASR files on and finally found my HUGE mistake. Been banging my head for days... Much thanks! One other question, though. It is NOT a good idea to use web updater anymore now that things are no longer what they were when purchased?

The other way to use webupdater.
1). Copy Garmindevice.xml --> Paste into SD card\garmin\ --> insert card into computer
2).open webupdater
3).Webupdater will detect your sd card as NUVI
4).You will get all of files you want within sd card !
5).This method is helpful for updating firmware ., You will get GUPDATE.GCD in sd card and just copy and paste in--> NUVI:\garmin\gupdate.gcd
NUVI will update unit firmware automatically when you disconnect USB.

This is the same technique that I used in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. The GUPDATE.GCD will only appear in WebUpdater if the <SoftwareVersion> has a lower value in GarminDevice.xml compared to the latest at Garmin update service.
How very cool! Just placed 16GB sd card into usb sd card adapter, created garmin sub-dir, copied the .xml file into it and ran Web Updater. It did show a Type M GPS chip hot fix which I got but do not know if it applies to the 885T. Other things like voices and vehicles were also there but did not want them... Any idea about the GPS Chip Type M hotfix? 473kb .BIN file saved into the \extdata dir. Not really wanting to apply it not knowing what that pertains to, er, like the gma code requirement being forced down? Much thanks for the hints!!!
2nd edit... The above questioned downloaded .BIN file is already on the 885T! Guess the .XML file does not account for this file's presence on the unit itself. No .GMA requirement on the 885T as yet, so guess this .BIN fixed something else.

Used GmapToolSetup055.exe to make a file and installed to Mapsource and worked great until I zoomed out past 50 mile. At 70, it lost all definition and detail. vague blobs of color, no roads. Zoom back to 50 miles or less and it works great?? Any ideas how to remedy/
