Of course the complete map package can go to the mSD card.
I'm having problems with this update. My Garmin only has 4GB internal storage, but up to this update, all previous map updates have fully installed happily. This one won't, reporting that it can't all be installed to the internal storage, as it's too big, but all previous updates, I'm sure, stuck some of the data on the μSD card, on which there's plenty of room... Or am I imagining that?
Current update, according to Express, is 8.40GB, so obviously that can't all install on the internal storage, BUT - it can't have got that much bigger than the previous one.
So - have they changed something with this one (or with Express?) whereby it will no longer put some data, as appropriate, on the μSD card if the internal storage is too small?
or is it that what it wants to put on the μSD card is bigger than 4GB (it's a 16GB card with lots of free space

@bert smith,
I just updated my nuvi 2595 with Express. If you have a 16GB SD card already installed on your Nuvi Garmin Express will see it and put one maps on the memory and the other on the SD card.
If I recall it has been doing this for the last 5 updates.

Yes, exactly what mine has always done - until now.
If I use Express, it simply tells me that there is not enough room on the internal memory. If I use MapInstall (never had to before!) it will only install up to 4GB of map sections.

@bert smith
You are right there is only a small increase in size of the two map files
5.15 GB (5,538,578,432 bytes) 2022.10
5.22 GB (5,608,767,488 bytes) 2022.20
but depending on what device you have all the additional files also increase too, most probably over the threshold.
Garmin Express will normally manage your space and give you options including an SD card if inserted, or it will give you regional options.
Spoiler: Example
bert smith, probably you have a different kind of problem. I have sufficient free space on PC and Nuvi. But stupid Express does not start the update process totally because I do not have sufficient free space on my CCD (main disk) on PC.
Now new version of Express is available. Maybe this bug will disappear.
Garmin, how much is 30 pieces of silver for Judas today? Were they worthy for crucifix of GPSPower?
I don't get the option to do a partial install like that.

I deleted what I could from the device (more than the extra size of the new map) - no luck. I went for a bigger SD Card, leaving the existing files on it - no luck. I tried a completely empty SD Card - no luck.
No, plenty of room on my C: drive (I've had that problem with Garmin before!) and I successfully updated my other Zumo (16GB internal memory) with no problem. Ive tried several older versions of Express, and the brand new one - no difference.

Now we know the device type ,I've tried two zumo 590's both give the option of using an SD card
Spoiler: zumo 590 update
Either contact Garmin EU as suggested or what I would do is copy the garmindevice.xml from the device to a clean FAT 32 formatted SD card (clone device)and update it that way. As you have Lifetime maps they will be unlocked by GE for your device, rename and arrange the files. i would clean up the old device files and place SID SQLite & JCV files you download with the SD card (clone device) in their respective folder on the device.
Spoiler: Files
Wonder why I don't get those options in Express then? Strange - and previous updates have been fine before this one, just installed, automatically splitting the files between the Zumo and the card.
My two Zumo are 590 upgraded to 595 firmware (years ago, always works fine). The one with 16GB internal NVRAM is of course an LM, and has updated to this version of the maps with no fuss. However, the one that won't update is a Harley Davidson Roadtech Zumo 590 also with 595 firmware. It has only 4GB NVRAM, and does NOT have lifetime maps - I need to unlock them. Thanks for the SD card suggestion - I'll play around with that once I get a little time.

Well, it's updated now. Exactly how, I don't know! I did do the copy the xml file to an SD card, and indeed it installed the map happily on that. Moving the files around would have been a right palaver though, so held that in reserve. I played around with my normal methods of upgrading, that have always previously been successful, no luck. Then I tried taking the XML file from the Zumo that had upgraded successfully (having 16GB internal storage) and putting it on the 4GB Zumo. Told it to reinstall the map, and it went ahead and apparently spent the usual 15 mins or so doing it. But in the end, no sign of the new map files anywhere, so goodness knows what it was doing!
Then I deleted the XML file, let the Zumo recreate a new one, all by itself. When it had done that, I went back to my normal process of changing the ID in the XML file to that of the 16GB Zumo, making the XML file read only, and trying again. This time, for whatever reason, it worked! No fuss, just installed the update, no dialogue about size or regions, just went ahead, split as previously between the device and the SD card. Unlocked the maps and changed the ID back to the correct one in the XML file, all done. What the difference was, I have no idea - something in the XML file obviously, but what, I don't know.
