You're probably no dumber than any of us, just confused. This stuff is not easy to get your head around at first, but think of gaining understanding of it to be like eating an elephant, little bits at a time. So forget the stuff you've tried so far and begin again:

For starters, there is really only ONE way you can TRULY successfully do what you're wanting to do and it DOESN'T involve reverse-engineering your existing gmapsupp.img map (see below how to do that though *). To do it properly, follow this:

  • You need to find and use a .gmap folder, also referred to as a 'Mapsource version' or 'PC Version', to install the map data on your PC. Try to find it by googling this: unlocked garmin north america 2018.20 gmap folder download.
  • When you have it, copy the .gmap folder into C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps [for Vista>Win10]. If you have XP the path is something like C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps.
  • Get another CF card minimum 2GB in size or you can use your existing one from the Goldwing's trunk but save a copy of it first. Connect the CF card to your PC and check it's properly recognized.
  • Get MapInstall onto your PC if you haven't already:

  • Open MapInstall and click 'Find Device' if it doesn't see the CF card. Then click 'Continue' and proceed to select the map tiles you want as per the tutorial linked in post no 2 but don't exceed 2GB of course.

Keep in mind that any unlocked map you make will not have the search by POI function working because the keyboard will be grayed out. But everything else should work ok.

More info in that thread: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. If your firmware is less than Version 4.5 you'll need to update for your navi to read NT maps.

(*) It is possible to make a simple preview map from an existing .img file to load the mapping data to your PC but it involves reverse-engineering using GMapTool and another program like cGPSmapper to do it. As this method won't give you any search functions in a re-compiled .img it's therefore practically useless for navigation. More info here:
