Tnx guys for your help, I did the update with the Updater (Zumo 660 v5.10) successfully.
I guess this day is not a waste because I learned something about branded devices, on the other hand I dont know what was happening with this device before...
Haha! Maybe not even 'mortared', just 'dry laid' Certainly the firmware for both devices was the same up to V3.50, both zumo 660 and Motorrad Nav IV V3.50 GCD files have MD5 hash of 5D718929FD7DB084D55839299ED03A9B. However, later versions haven't been issued for the Motorrad that I'm aware of only for the zumo up to V5.10 so perhaps there's something in the later versions stopping them being effective in the Motorrad. If he can't re-flash the latest version we'll need a good coder to have a close look (hint, hint).

My best guess would be that a previous firmware update attempt was interrupted in some way. You can see how that's possible yourself by watching the verbose output from Updater.exe, the existing software is erased and the 'new' software is then loaded. Any number of things can go wrong, a dropped USB connection due to a dodgy cable or a loss of power etc.. Result can be an erased rgn14 or an incomplete firmware loaded to it and regardless of the reason the outcome is the device can't boot and displays 'system software missing' message. Garmin calls it's operating firmware 'software' which it is of course. Usually very easily fixed by a successful re-flash with an appropriate RGN file because it's already in preboot. Many other so-called 'brickings' aren't so easily fixed however. Good outcome for you, well done.
It's odd that Garmin "Updater" could not detect these sort of problems and step the user through a fix. Did it at least print message regarding potential issues and fixes? Is it possible to write proggy running on Window to do a better job than "Updater?"
Do not PM me with questions. That's what a forum is for.
Yes in these times, sure, but when it was introduced (before Garmin devices even had MSM capability or had USB connectivity) it wasn't at all odd.
There are pop-up progress messages of course. After starting with an 'initializing' pop-up, this is what a successful flash looks like: A brief 'updating' message quickly going to 100%, an 'erasing' message taking a little while, then another 'updating' one where the firmware is actually being written to the device, finally one saying 'update was successful':Did it at least print message regarding potential issues and fixes?
If the connection drops/device loses preboot then an error message with details is shown but other than the bleedin' obvious, no other 'fixes' are suggested:
There are other messages, such as for example where a region can't be properly written it might be suggested to contact Garmin. Depending on what you were trying to flash you may not want to do that.
For me it's not possible. I wonder who could do that? ..... lemme think .... We need a volunteer. Everyone but Osiris take one step back please... Oh good! We have someone. Now get to work Ossy.Is it possible to write proggy running on Window to do a better job than "Updater?"
Hey guys. I'm new here, quite tech savvy but not really with GPS systems. I have a problem with a Nuvi 1390 that we had forever and even bought the map pack. It doesn't have voice. Files seem to be missing on the hard drive. I think i have the original firmware. I downloaded GarminCure and tried entering pre boot mode but i just don't want to cause any more issues. If someone experienced in this can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays everybody!
@reshtheory
Welcome to GPS Power. If the 1390 is booting up and working but is mute when navigating then it's definitely not bricked. Cure firmware is only useful to enable Mass Storage Mode in devices which can't boot fully because of corrupt files not loading. Once MSM is enabled they can be deleted or a re-format can be done. There are a few possibilities why it doesn't have voice for navigation:
(i) If it also doesn't have any other sounds such as key tones when selections are made then check it's not set to mute or very low volume on the Volume page.
(ii) If the Volume level is set ok with no sounds at all then there's likely a hardware problem.
(iii) If it has tones for selections, maybe there's no VPM voice files loaded as you suspect so check in Tools>Settings>Language that there's a voice selected or look in Mass Storage Mode connected to a PC that there it are proper*.vpm files in the root folder named 'Voice'. You should be able to replace missing VPM files by connecting it to GarminExpress or WebUpdater.
Hello people, another newbie on the forum.
I found this forum and registered in order to find instructions on how to un-brick my nüvi 1390...
Instruction seem more then clear enough, however I cannot find the Garmin Cure 3 program. If anybody could hand a little help to solve that problem, would be enormously appreciated.
I found the updater.rar via a link in one of the previous messages on this topic.
Thanks to the initial user for finding and providing the solution.
I've been able to un-brick my Garmin nuvi 1390 thanks to the info posted here. Wonderfull & a Very Big Thank You to all the people that made this possible!
Hats off...
