First TomTom, need some help to understand

Hello there,

few days ago I buyed my first TomTom XXL with Western Europe maps. Very nice. I'd like to update my map but I don't understand some things..

- Which map to download? 1GB or 2GB? I was looking in TomTom, connected to pc. The "Western Europe" folder was about 1,5 GB. Then I were in TomTom and there was written: Western Europe 885.4053.

- Actually my version is: 9.465. Can I take a 900.XXXX map without problem?

- In [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] thread I'm reading some feature like: IQRoutes & ALG - CSpeech & ASR - HNR. Is it usefull to have a map with all features like 900.4602?

- About IQRoute - when does it show up the image on TomTom? I've have taked some exit but no image like [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] were shown. How to do it?

- Previously I got a Garmin. In TomTom I point the same destination as in Garmin but it let's me make other streets (longer time). But it's setted to let me make the fastest trip. Why that? What should I do?

Before downloding a map you should read [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

It depends on what you need, on navcore version and on navigator hardware.
For example a map with cspeech is not useful if your TomTom does not have a microphone (it is mainly a waste of space)

What you see in the image is ALG. It is shown only entering or exiting the highway.
IQRoute is a simple screen where you should select day and time of departure. Basing on these informations TomTom chooses the route with less traffic.

In general:
Check the tutorials, as I just cleaned them up a bit

This will give you a better understanding of the terms we use and the general know how.
The chart in the map section will show what map is suitable for a particular Navcore - not all NC versions are listed, so if in doubt the next higher version in the chart will indicate you need it for a certain map, otherwise the numbers below you version number are vaild.
As for the Navcores: the best is what Home offers you and to make it work you need to patch the Navcore and activate the new map - we offer several tools for the job.
Always be aware that having a suitable Navcore and map does not mean it has to work!!! You have to carefully check if for the map of choice you also see the corresponding meta code! Without it a map is unusable.
For devices that only have a limited Navcore or versions below 9.xxx you can use the SE versions - see switchfiles for dummies!
As an alternative I always offer several versions of the latest Navcores modified to suit almost any device.

I've read it. A lot of map are compatible but I don't know wich one is better than another.

Ok. Is HNR compatible with all TomTom's or does it depend on the hardware?

Undestood. I've seen ALG in the highway.

I've checked the sticked items but did not find that what I am looking for, so I wwas asking

Ok, as said before: with a V9 Navcore you can use basically any map you like - if the meta code is posted.
Simply download what you need and use FastActivate to patch your Navcore and activate the map.
Maybe a good start for you would be to check the TT website, you can find manuals there as well additional info on the coverage of the maps (check the map store, you don't have to buy a map though).
Last hint would be the build in help and tutorial on your TT, check it and the TT shows you how to operate it.
Coming from Garmin it will take a little bit to get used to the different menu layout and functions.

Last question:
If I download a new map, speed cameras or so could I connect to TomTom Home without problem or should I avoid it?

About the different menu layout yes but not about the function. I've clicked every single icon to know what is behind it

But what I say is that they have different ways to calculate the route. i.e.: If I must go from A to B the garmin gives me a route of 10km in 20min, through the city lets say. The TomTom gives me a route of 25km in 19min taking Highways. I know I've setted to tell me the fastest street but there are also 15km more.

Home is no issue and don't need patching unless you need the simulation of your device.
If you are using a NC not intended for a device you need a ttgo.bak and ttgo.ori with the values of the last NC for your device.
Otherwise Home will complain, but there is no real need for Home anyway, I have not used it for updates for over 2 years...

Route calculations always differ on different platforms as the manufactorer uses different routines for the calulations.
