Yes I did, always done it that way. Only difference at the first step is I cannot install from Google Play because the latest version there I cannot install ( because Intel Based device I think ? ) so
I use the same original version 1.18.1 from apkpure for the first step untill the mapdownload. Maybe that's the reason.

I will try without Google account see if that helps.

I did it exactly the way you did but after login into my Google account after it the update notification is back again.
Think I leave it as it is, no idea what else to do anymore.
