    Default Garmin Edge 800 UK

My Garmin edge has developed a fault whereby its readings jump wildly - it has worked well for years and I don't know the trigger for this issue. I noticed it on the Grade reading which was never even close to correct, and then I looked and even Speed is not at all stable. It must be related to the satellite data it is computing if all readings are inaccurate. I want to update its firmware but cannot find any way to do it as it is on the latest build 2.7 and Garmin Express does not allow me to merely reinstall the current build. Does anyone know how to force a firmware update?

Install the new firmware update for your Edge 800!
There is currently an important firmware update for the Edge 800, if you experience edge issues this update may solve your problem. Even if you have no problems, you can always perform the latest new update.

How should you provide your device with the latest software?

Update the internal software of your GPS with Garmin WebUpdater.
    Download & install WebUpdater:
PC: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
MAC: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

If WebUpdater is installed and running on your computer, it will first check which GPS is connected to the computer.
The main software is then checked and an update proposed if necessary.
Then additional updates are suggested that you can tick.
    Check all updates

Hi many thanks for this. It said it had updated the firmware but I could not tell, and my issues remain. Is there a way I can take the device to an older version, say 2.60, and see if that helps?

Before you try anything like that and many a user has bricked their GPS Unit.

    Try this

    Garmin Edge 800 Factory Reset

There are a few instances in which it may be necessary to perform a master reset on the Edge 800. A master reset should be performed if the Edge is:

    Not functioning properly
Needing to be restored to factory default settings*
    Not receiving a satellite signal
To bring up language selection prompt if incorrect language text is showing
Unable to pair up accessories, such as the heart rate monitor or speed/cadence sensor

All settings, workouts, and satellite data will be erased when resetting the GPS.
Workouts can be backed up in Garmin Connect.
Refer to the FAQ article "How can I backup my personal settings and profiles on my Edge 800?" to back up personalized settings.

    From Garmin

Spoiler: Backing up Edge 800 Settings and Profiles
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    To perform the master reset:

    Power device off
Press and hold Lap/Reset and Start/Stop
Power device on while still holding both buttons
Continue holding buttons when the Garmin "splash" screen appears
Release buttons when Garmin "splash" screen disappears

The Edge 800 is now reset. Leave the device outside with a clear view of the sky for a minimum of 20 minutes to acquire satellite data.

*A User Data Clear can be performed in order to remove personal settings without removing history.

To perform the User Data Clear:

    Power device off
Touch and hold finger in top-left corner of display
Power device on while still maintaining pressure on display
Release display when the Reset device settings to factory default? message appears
    Touch Yes

This will erase personal settings, such as the user profile. However, saved activities will not be removed.

But before you try any of this please read it over again to make sure you know what you are doing........

I have tried this - thanks - but to no avail. The values on the device still jump around. Is there anyway to try different version of firmware?

Has you any experience of getting these devices repaired?

The Edge 800 is not worth getting it repaired it is to old. Plus it would cost some money to do that with no real guarantee the problems would not come back again.

If you use your GPS a lot then think about getting a new one.
You can search in the UK for a replacement unit for a good price......or here in Europe for one too.

Garmin has dropped the prices in the UK on all models of Edge

Old firmware versions available here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Download the version you want, then rename the file to GUPDATE.GCD, and copy it to the Garmin folder on the Edge.
Then unplug it and switch it on, and it should install that firmware version.

Downgrading will overwrite your personal settings, so back them up first if you want to keep them.
See here [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

If you do not know what you are doing you will brick it then you can be put in the bin.

Too many user's brick there Garmin units and want other's to get them out of their mess.

You have been very helpful, thanks again.

I successfully put 2.50 on the device, but it still jitters and registers between 0 and 1.7mph while at rest! Do you know if there are any other data files that it uses, which are not part of the firmware update but which might have been corrupted and could cause the device to malfunction? is there anywhere to get a clean version of these files? I can't believe it's a hardware problem as everything works, and it does not crash, it just gives inaccurate readings...

You seen to know your way around how to do things and I think you can do your own searching from this point on.
There is enough info out there you can check on. Be it this forum or and other forum on the Garmin Edge series.
If you still have problems you can always contact Garmin support and see what they have to say.

So I wish you all the luck in coming to some type of conclusion. Do you live with what you say is going on with your Edge 800 or buy a new or used Edge GPS Unit??
