Thread: Voice Edit & others - Garmin Drive 50 LMT

Hello everyone,

I have a Garmin Drive 50 LMT and I can't get the TTS Voice Edit or Speech Doctor or other programs from TurboCCC to read from the device. Does anyone know if my model is supported by the software since it's very similar to the Nuvi series? If its not does anyone know of any software that I can use with it to edit voice files and speech and such? I like to customize my devices. I would like to change some of the voice things in it. go over to the site they spell out how to make changes

All changes should be done on the PC and not on the Garmin.

Backup first.

How-To

1- Start TTSVoiceEditor.
2- Use File->Open to open a VPM file (TTS type only)
3- Click twice on the word/expression you wish to change
4- Enter the new word/expression. You are not limited to the original length. See "Hints" below.
5- Click OK to change or Cancel to abort this change
6- Modify as many words/expressions as you wish by repeating steps 4&5.
7- Optionally, you can change the voice rate, the voice level and the screen name.
9- Use File->Save to save the new VPM file. Add ".vpm" to your filename. You still need to use the original .vpm file name.
10- Copy it on your Garmin in the Garmin/Voice directory.

I'm still getting an error. When i try TTS Voice Editor it says "Runtime error '9' subscript out of range" and when I try TTS Speech Doctor I get "The VPM file does not have the required Abbreviation Block"

Giomen gave you the answer in Post #3. Perhaps it was too brief to be taken in, however to be clear the TTSVoiceEditor tool doesn't cope with modern TTS files.

Off course not and I'm not like that, my postings here are all only meant only to be helpful as are Giomen's. I'm sorry you saw it as a possible insinuation of lack of intelligence, the point is that P#3 clearly WAS too brief to be easily taken in and I was politely and gently suggesting both you and the kind member helping were quite wasting your time persevering with VoiceEditor. I had/have no desire to offend Giomen either who I now feel should be defended further. So about this:

.....because what he posted was a page that is in Russian language discussing voices in Russian, & when I translated it, offered nothing in response to my question regarding if MY model was capable of it. My posting title CLEARLY states the type and model GPS device that I use. In some ways maybe it just would have been easier for someone to simply say "Unfortunately your GPS model doesn't allow editing of TTS voice files"?

He actually did say as much because it's certinly in the extensive README which is displayed at the base of that page and gives several references to "Compatible navigators: nuvi 2x97 / 3x97, ..., nuviCam, the entire series Drive" in regard to TTS3 voices. The RU>EN google transation is clear enough in my opinion and quite comprehensive. My interpretation of Giomen's P#3 is this:
"Only one description for modern TTS editing I found:" Means: "I know of only one described method for editing modern TTS voices"

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] (He's expecting you to translate it and read the README which opens with that page. It certainly only deals with TTS3 files for RU which have already been modified to correct inconsistencies.)

Giomen's first language isn't English and perhaps I'm just a bit more used to his turn of phase. I hope I'm not now suspected of "man-splaining" this.

Following on from that README info, the fact that someone has been able to do that with RU TTS3 files suggests to me that the same method could be used to edit others. I'm not a programmer, there are others here who are but as yet no one's offered to try. Maybe this will stir someone to do so .... looking at you osiris4isis! TurboCCC seems to have gone quiet again.

I have tested this on a Smart Drive 61-D LMT and get the same error on any of the voices I try.

Butter is correct about this.

What you could try and I do not know if it would work is to replace voice Jack with an older voice Jack and see if it will work on your Drive 51.

If it works then you can edit it and then try again.

But make backups of what ever you try.

You will need an older GPS say the 2595 to get the older version of the TTS voices.
