Which load faster, SD or internal storage of nuvi?

Hope some1 can answer. Which format would load map faster and or just the loading process when turn on Nuvi. Will it load faster when putting map, jcv, 3d, etc on an 8gb class 10 Or the internal storage of nuvi or it's the same?

This is question is for latest nuvi model since it's had a huge storage abt 8gb.

In my experience, there's very little perceivable load difference (if any). I have not actually tried the comparizon on 3xxx model.

Class 10 means nothing in terms of performance. That is an SD "write speed" factor and the GPS does not write to the SD.

SD adds convenience but you do have plenty of room in the new 8gig models.

It is ALWAYS much wiser to copy any new and untested (by you) data to an external (micro)SD card before finally using it on the GPS internal flash memory.
At least if there are any problems - lock ups etc. - you can remove the card.

The main thing is not quantity but quality. Garmin work with usual file system. So many depend on fragmentation and physical position of files on media and so on...

So basically the loading process between SD and internal are at least the same speed, will not see speed performance if using SD or internal storage. The rest of replies, i think you're off topic but thanks.

I think you can't easily see which one is faster while looking at map loading because:
1) Firmware caches map data
2) When drawing maps, a considerable bit of time is spent on drawing, so reading speed variations are vanished.
Also reading speeds should be very different on different devices.

So.. I can make patched firmwares which test the reading speeds by reading two long files and measuring the reading time.
I could test it myself but I don't have any devices except nuvi 6xx, which would show completely odd results anyway as it's kinda slow.
If someone is interested tell me your Garmin device model.

OK since we all must stay absolutely on topic here.

You have asked at least four questions (I think).

Based purely on many hundreds (thousands) of hours "loading", making, modifying, installing mapsets and data with many Garmin GPS units, but not your particular model.
No scientific measurement involved.


What does "load" mean?

Some files don't "load" at all until required. They are probably checked at "load" time.
Hence the warnings in my last post. Sorry OT again.


If by "loading'" you mean actual transferring/installing the files into flash memory.
You will probably not notice much difference if using a class 4+ card.
Using an external card reader/writer would probably be the fastest method of them all.

If by "loading" you mean the time taken from switch on until the GPS is 100% ready, navigating and awaiting your input.
Presuming we are talking time-wise here. It will take longer from an external SD card.
How much longer? Impossible to say. There are far too many variables.
Processor, software, memory speed, algorithms, data already stored, file sizes, types etc. All play a part in the end result.

If by "loading" you mean using and caching any mapset once everything is operating as expected and in actual use (navigation).
I doubt that you will perceive any difference.

Perhaps you could try your mapsets and data on both with a stopwatch and report back.

My two bits: so far the highest speed (up to 30% faster than ordinary sd/sdhc) ram chips are developed by Samsung. Named as PRAM or Class 6 SDHC.
