TomTom 720 stuck on start up screen

Hi,

I have a modified TomTom 720 with 730 functionality from assistance I received on GPS Underground when it was running. Recently I updated TomTom Home and I think it has done something to my machine...I also have a dead battery (holds little charge) which I dont think is helping.

Anyway, when booting up, I'm getting past the TomTom splash to a custom welcome screen I put in some time back - the only way to clear the screen is to reset. From here, it is getting stuck and wont boot into the navigation software. I've tried resetting the device via the proper method many times, but it hasn't fixed the problem.

Is there an easy fix to overcome this? I can view and edit the memory and memory card of the TomTom via the USB connection to my PC, so hopefully there is some hope here!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Does "modified" mean SE navcore? If soo, it sounds like setconfig.txt has some wrong settings.
By the way, it's difficult to help out without knowing which navcore you are using.

I can suggest to try to use the Clear_Flash tool:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

and to run a Scandisk of the drive, by automatically repairing file system errors.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I believe I have the SE navcore.

I ran the clear flash tool (which didnt work), but then did a scan disk which did work! Hooray! Many thanks.

Now the problem I have is that I cant update via Home 2 PC application, and as such this isn't a major problem, but I cant get the latest GPS fix data. Is this going to cause me an issue, or does it mean that first fix will just be a bit slow?

As gor the quick GPS fix goes, no issues, the first fix will be "cold", i.e. slow (typically 1-2 min depending on he signal available).

By the way, here you get your quick GPS data, always up-to-date (this is only for SirfIII chipset, i.e. Go x20/x30):

I seem to be getting quicker locks now I've locked the first time. I've also successfully changed my 720 battery today, which went well and now I should have less discharging issues!

Is the GPS data update essential, or just a one off? i.e. once I've locked, is the GPS data essentially automatically updated and as such I should experience a quick lock next time around? If not, where should I put the Ephemeris.cab file?

Obviously the device stores the latest position, so if you start from the same place the fix will be quite fast, when you boot it up again.

Extract the Ephemeris.CAB archive and copy the files into the "ephem" folder.

I'm relatively new to this so may be wrong answer, but in loading up the new software / maps etc, I found 2 ways of locking up the device: TomTom home was one the cause of the problem... it recognised i had SE Navcore and locked the device... reloading the software cured the problem. 2nd time was caused by trying to copy across favourites... mapsettings.cfg - after deleted this it worked fine again
