Could be Garmins doing, yes. But I'll guess that if you would take a break after 2.5 hour and in that break, restart the Navigon app, one would be safe ?!
Not the best way to solve the problem maybe, but if it works.

Until now I was restarting the trip while driving, but it's very annoying. I'm planning to use an older version which works.
