Runtime Liberty Trap crashes are a separate issue as you clearly understand and would be unrelated to your unit's SD read problem. I don't think the map img file naming is in fact an issue in this case because the SD isn't being acknowledge at all by the unit at times. Some older Garmin units with later software versions can indeed use both gmapsupp.img and gmapsup1.img in Garmin folder of SD however and it's worth trying the rename as suggested by our good friend ORAK. He is the resident Kenwood expert and you should follow any advice from him about an attempt of fw downgrade advisability.

Unlike the direct system to report map errors, afaik they don't have a particular link for normal users to report any specific problems in released fw like with UAT versions. Just email support [and good luck with that!]. I've made a start for you below [just the easy bits ]:
