Okay, thanks for the additional info...
Yeah the problem with my unit (Kenwood DNX9980HD) is an odd one. I just don't get what's wrong with it. It can read maps on the SD card fine but it won't read them at boot time...about 70% of the time. Instead it pretends there is no SD card inserted at all and just has the [non-routable] basemap available and nothing from the card. I have to eject the card (which is a pain because you have to hold the eject button for several seconds to lower the screen) and re-insert it and it works instantly. Thereafter, everything is fine. But most of the times at startup it doesn't read the card, so if I don't do the card re-insertion, I can't get maps. It does sometimes load the card like it should but usually it doesn't. I don't even have to remove the card entirely just push it in so it pops out and push it in again and boom it works.
I've tried clearing the non-vol, resetting the unit, all to no avail. I've also tried three different SD cards and all react the same. It all started when I upgraded from 2015.10 to 2015.40 maps. The 2015.10 worked absolutely fine off the SD card at all times, with no maps on the unit's internal flash. When I moved to 2015.40 on the same SD card I started having issues. The map would disappear mid-routing/mid-driving at times, leaving me with just the base and lost or frozen routing. So then I tried the same maps on two other SD cards and the same thing. So, naturally, I figured it was the maps so went back to 2015.10 thinking that should solve the issues. Well I don't lose maps at random any more (once the card is re-inserted after boot it works fine) but at boot it won't read the SD card...I've tried three different map version across three different SDs and it's always the same. It's extremely annoying and I have no idea why it's happening.
The only solution I can think of is to put the maps on the internal flash but the problem is there just isn't enough space to fit the full NA map, plus 3D buildings, plus ASR, plus JCV. I don't think there's enough to put the "Can+US" mapset either as that's the bulk of the NA maps anyway and it's not much smaller I don't think. So I was thinking just make a custom mapset that's much smaller and fit everything but if ASR won't work that idea is out the window. Now I'm wondering if putting the main map .img on the unit will allow it to boot and read the SD card properly (where I could put all the other files) but I have to try and see what happens.
