    @prdie
I think the screens you've shown are maybe Map and/or Firmware rather than Locale dependent in this case. Typically with some modern Garmin units using an EU map will get you the top appearance and with an NA map the lower one, but then changing the Locale will reverse it with some maps on some units (e.g. AU NT mapping on some nuvi 2/3xxx can change appearance depending on Locale set and even varies between models [fw has some influence also in that case] and will have either the round or rectangular SLI and corresponding blue or green top banner). But i really have no idea with Kenwood units if it works only with NA/EU mapping data type or it's fw or both, however naturally it can't be Locale influenced as that can't be set.

If you're brave, you could maybe try cross-flashing the NA model firmware but there's a very real risk of bricking of course. It mightn't help anyway and for sure won't if the appearance is solely map dependent. Or just change the map to an NA NT to see if appearance changes to confirm/eliminate the map influence.

neil thank you for good clues. All I've found so far was about that the locale setting (after hard reset) is influencing the color of the upper bar (and as well the speed icon). But only for nuvi units (despite the fact that the application inside the kenwood and nuvi is the same - at least the appearance)

I fear that crossflash is not possible, because there is no full firmware flash for kenwood units. Just updates. And Garmin fw is part of the kenwood one.

But the safest thing I could do is to load NA map as you advise, I'll be back with observations.

If someone could confirm or deny whether the locale setting is present in some file on the Garmin filesystem or not, I would be grateful.

EDIT : I was unsuccessful, I was trying the AU map and despite it loaded seamlessly, there is no change in the UI color. Moreover I've found that map updates for this unit (DNX4230BT) are run just from SD card and are not copied in the internal memory.

    Ola,

sorry to barge in but I have a few questions:

    has anyone tried topo maps?
is it possible to send/receive TRACKS to/from the device?
are there other car radio manufacturers that use garmin software?

    thanks in advance,
    Dustbite

Yes, it works with the 2015 maps (see post #49 here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] ).

I'm not 100% sure you need the PNX file. I don't even think you need the 3D map, since the DNX9990HD does not support 3D maps.

The .gma and .unl you will definitely need. I suspect the lack of those 2 files is what keeps it from working for many folks. As I discussed earlier in this thread, I got the files from a download of a map I purchased a while back. I don't know if there's any other way to get them, other than making a one-time investment for a map upgrade since they contain personal information directly related to your device.

For those of you who state it will not load in internal storage, it may be due to the lack of these files. I have reloaded maps numerous times to internal memory with no issues. As a workaround, can someone confirm whether you can use the maps off an sd card without the .gma and .unl files?

As already mentioned in post #62 runs no problem here

Got Two DNX7230 units within the close family circles & have been using this method with unlocked 2015.20 maps since August last year

Here's a screen print of the files on our SD cards

    Hope this helps.

I tried building the .unl from the jet mouse keygen. I'm not sure it will work since I read something about it not working on fids>21xx?? Since the 205 map is in the 3k range I'm not sure. Though I can't tell without the gma. Does the gma and unl lollipop posted work? I'm thinking "no" if what you say is true, Euro that those files are unit specific. Im super tired, I appologise to anyone trying to read my post.

I have read that some people have succeeded in creating a blank text file and renaming it with the .unl extension. I don't know if it has worked for anyone on these units in particular though. However, I think you will be stuck because of the .gma file regardless. As I recall, lollipop's files ended up not working.

However, I re-read the thread and it appears 1 or 2 people posted above that they got it to work without those 2 files by putting the map on an sd card instead of on internal memory.

Maybe I'll give that a go then. When I bought this unit it came with one free update.... wish I had kept the files all those years ago

So I tried the SD method with the below file structure. Seems to work fine. I didn't use the ASR files mostly because my SD wasn't big enough, however as I read it they aren't used anymore in the 9990hd. The JCV is the split screen.

    H:\GARMIN

    | GMAP3D.IMG
    | GMAPSUPP.IMG
    +---\JCV
    | D3191150A.JCV

Thanks to SamSpade13 for his file structure work. (maybe not the first but its the one I used) I unlocked the 2 .img files just for kicks using gimgunlock. I don't know if it was required but I did it.

After I installed it, both the OEM and the SD map was listed as map options. I just unchecked the OEM incase there was some conflict. Anyone having trouble with the SD card not loading, update your firmware. That seems to fix those issues for most people. Now I just need higher cap SD "that works" and then I will see if I can add any other options to it. I thought my junction view was selectable between fullscreen and split. i only uploaded the split. i would like to try the fullscreen also just because if i can why not.
