I can't be sure about your unit but what usually works with Kenwoods is to connect it to your pc via rear (mini ?) usb slot so you can see it as an external storage device. This way you can access Garmin files but what you need to do first is to install Garmin's USB Drivers

Before you do anything make a full backup of Kenwood's internal memory including hidden and operating system protected files, better safe than sorry. You can change the settings in Windows to make those files visible under Folders menu.

thanks ellinas for the reply. the link below is the picture of the back of the unit itself. it doesn't look like it has a mini usb socket on it for pc connection like in the nuvis. that is my concern basically. the only thing i am sure of is that there is the standard usb socket hanging on the side if you could look at the same picture. well i am pretty sure that can read audio and video files to be played by the system. only question is, could it be used to browse garmin files as well? i am still waiting for my unit to come this week. the reason i ask about this so soon is so that i can plan right away how to go about dissecting and turning the unit to work and behave like a nuvi gps..... yes i would surely backup all the files in the unit as soon as i get a clear view of what to do and how to go about doing it. anymore inputs and suggestions are indeed very welcome.
