.apk is the app installer for android (similar to .cab for WinCE), it contained the executable/library/config/etc... There are .apk for different version of iGO8/MyWay/Primo/NextGen You don't install anything without running .apk first. The procedure for installing iGO/Primo/NextGen on android is
1. Copy the product directory to device (for Primo it's usually is /iGO for NextGen it's usually /iGO_NextGen)
2. Copy over the .apk (you can put it inside directory of step 1)
3. Execute/Run the .apk (you do this by clicking on it under android GUI, but for certain device you might not have access to android GUI directly for instead some sort of shell which only allow you access to the Nav proggy already installed*)
TTS voice engine is a process outside that of iGO/Primo/NextGen. It will be part of the android OS and controlled/set by android OS setting. But it's a prerequisite to get TTS working inside iGO/Primo/NextGen. Without correclty installed, you won't hear anything when you select a TTS voice file inside iGO/Primo/NextGen.
* what we call "unlocking" a device is to exit the shell and expose the device native GUI to the user (ex: unlocking PND allow access to WinCE to installed/configure new proggy)
