I remember when I was dabbling for the first time in GPS maps for my car back in 2010 that certain software was better for each country or continent because of the availability of better maps. For example I remember hearing things like Garmin (or was it TomTom) was better in the US, iGO was the best in Europe, etc. The reason given was always because the maps available for those programs was better in their respective regions.

These days I've noticed that HERE (which I think used to be Navitec) and TomTom both publish maps for iGO. So these days you should choose your GPS software simply because of its UI/features or are the maps available still a big consideration. Also were these rumours about better maps in the past ever true?
