I have a Garmin Nuvi 250W and Garmin XT on Nokia 5230.
Yes you make a good point there.
I guess some folks wouldn't know devices can be updated, some I've spoken to had no idea it could be done.
They seemed rather pleased when advised they could be & how to go about it.
I run more than one at the same time because I haven't yet found (without literally spending a fortune) a nav program that will do everything I want in the one program.
So I get around that buy running a couple that combined give me all the info I require.
Now I have them & have them set up how I want I probably won't buy anymore until the hardware gives out on them.
Seeing as they're all CE devices except the GPS-60 updates have probably stopped or soon will if they haven't already.
So long as I can do what I need to with them I'll keep using them until something I think is better comes along at a reasonable price.

Yes JmaCWQ M8 we and others could chat about this here:
As all sorts of devices are left in draws and not modded and could be used till they die " I have a few that won't die "but till they do they are doing just fine, so if ya wanna just chat about what you can do to them etc post in the above thread may get others interested in getting their older unit a new life, surprises may arise.

My wife and me own and use a Garmin Nüvi 3490 and a Kenwood DNX5250BT, and we both have a Garmin Oregon 600 for geocaching. And one old Garmin Oregon 450 as spare.
(interesting fact is both 600s often crash simultaneously while geocaching)
I only use google gps services, i don't think i really need these devices. It's useless for me. According to me these devices should only be owned by professionals.
Whenever I come across an interestingly priced second hand Garmin GPS unit, I have to buy it. Most units are used for experimenting. I have bricked a few in the past, but with the great help of several members here I got them working again. On some units I had to replace the screen (was cr@cked when I bought it) or the battery. All together quite fun and a nice learning process. Currently I have about 18 units, among which Oregon 450, nüvi 2x0(W), 2x5(W), nüvi 350, nüvi 550, nüvi 660, nüvi 14xx, nüvi 24xx, nüvi 25xx, nüvi 50 and nüvi 66.

Ah, my fellow compulsive-buying demi-Kiwi is lagging badly still. I have 44 working units and 6 to 8 [hard to tell, too many disassembled] non-working along with an overflowing 'bits n pieces' drawer. I don't have a 6x though and my only outdoor unit [apart from SP 2610 & 2720 which albeit waterproof don't really count] is a nuvi 500. Many units bought bricked and/or with damaged screen. Surprising how many with cr@cked screen were also bricked, makes you wonder?
Not really, lol.![]()
