    FWIW

My acer tablets and $80 Huawei Y300 phone file managers can also access and manipulate the files with ease.
Tested with several nuvis and Garmin Dakota 20.

Simple Android direct USB connection to GPS. No microSD card removal required.
i.e. USB mass storage mode transfer file management.

Yes, but don't you need a special USB cable to connect your phone or does the garmin one used for connecting to computer fit ?

By the fact, I suppose Monterra (under androïd) should be able to do this job.

Spitting hairs, a smartphone/tablet/PDA is a computer ['another device']. The point is it's not possible to transfer files on the unit or on the SD, without somehow having to use another device. Using the proprietary Garmin OS by itself it's only possible by commands in update.txt on the SD. And then you still need another device to pre-write the command. Copying files from the SD to the unit memory that way isn't a problem but moving from one folder to another on the SD itself seems to be. Maybe they can be copied if they are root files, but it's really moot anyway.

Does Monterra have the ability to copy/paste or move files as other Android OS devices? It doesn't seem to be mentioned in the OM:

This particular discussion is getting quite OT here, but it is interesting and if it continues with some fresh ideas it can be spun off into another thread. Any other new suggestions for doing this in the field?

Yes, it is possible on the Monterra; just install a file managing utility like ES File Explorer.

OK, this's kind of a nit, but I notice that on several of Caty's posts quoting the table from Garmin, the 2x5W and 6xx series (and I'm sure others; I own a 205W and a 660) list "micro SDHC" card compatibility, but these units accept standard (not micro) cards. If you own one of these units, it's obvious what size card it accepts, but one would think that after several iterations of the table, Garmin would publicize correct information. This, of course, makes me wonder what else they've misstated.

As to my personal experience: I'm using Kingston 8GB class 10 micro SDHC cards (with standard SD adapters where needed) in my two 205Ws, 660, and 3760. All work just fine with the full CN NA NT mapset (currently at 2015.10).

Well, 'Garmin is Garmin' after all and we've grown used to their foibles i guess. Not a hill o'beans compared to their using us for beta testing of software and firmware though.

My nitpickin' follows: Maybe a typo to lump 660 in with the other nuvis? Series 2 and 7 got firmware upgrades in recent years to remove the 2GiB FAT16 file size limit for images on SD cards and also to allow a second map gmapsup1.img on cards, but unless I slept thru it for them [quite likely, channeling Prof. Farnsworth lately], early SPs and Series 3 & 6 nuvis are still stuck with the 2 GiB file limit. 2015.10 NA ALL is 2.16 GiB (2,329,477,120 bytes)

EDIT: Apologies Mr. Natural, you haven't made a typo it seems. As i've now seen other reports that users were getting NA All 2014.40 to work on 3xx/6xx units, in spite of it being 2.10 GiB and well over the 2Gib limit, I've done an experiment and found that it does in fact load and work on those [supposed] 2GiB limited devices. I'm a little confounded by this and it defies explanation. The 2.16 GiB 2015.10 as expected doesn't work. Why one and not the other? Anyone able to explain this?

Well, Neil, it looks like you're gonna get even more confounded: my 2015.10 NA All *.img file is, indeed, 2.16 GiB (2,329,477,120 bytes), and like the previous 2014.40 NA All version, it works just fine on my 660. Maybe the Binary Fairy touched my unit with her wand...
