Brilliant. Thank you for your efforts and support. That process worked fine. Update completed and device is now running .. 3.60. The unit was bought by someone else as a gift for a friend who is a botanist and does lots of surveys. The purchased the eTrex from aliexpress not realising that the item would be supplied from China. Hopefully this experience will help anyone else who ends up in the same situation.

Glad I could help and i've learned from this too. Likely all regional variations of the eTrex 10 are hardware-identical and can be safely cross-flashed. Thanks for offering up the CN unit as a guinea pig for that test, it could've easily have ended up as a quite pretty paperweight TBH. Usually if the original fw is available i'd have made a hybrid fw using the original ramloader combined with the new main system software, that gives an easy path back if things go wrong. I don't understand why Garmin makes it so hard to find some current version firmwares yet others are easy to get, even very old ones.

BTW, it's not the first time someone has been sold a Garmin device without knowing that it may be running regional software unsuited to where it's intended to be used. Worst of all are trackers and collars for hunting dogs because they link via VHF radio. Some are impossible to safely modify and often, even if they can be, their resultant use is illegal because of banned radio frequencies locally.

You may need to manually remove any remaining originally-loaded CH files i think. Some of them, such as voice files etc., do have a potential to interfere with proper operation of the US/EU fw and i doubt GE/WU would have replaced all of them by overwriting with their proper equivalents because of naming differences. I'd get rid of anything with CH characters in the folder or file name. After removing anything like that always reboot and hard reset it, then place outside to regain a proper satellite fix. If the flash didn't trigger a reset afterwards (where you again have to choose locale, language etc.) then do that now: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] - should be same or very similar for the 10 as for eTrex 20/30 method shown there.
