I don't know if this will get you out of trouble, but there is an older small Atlantic Basemap Version 2 with some basic WW major roads. It's only 6762496 bytes (6.44MiB) and is non-DEM but DEM data uses a lot of space so maybe your original Basemap doesn't have it and i don't recall it being available on an etrex10 basic B&W screen anyway. Maybe someone has the original basemap for you and will post it but in the mean time here's ATL_V2:

Hello,
a Garmin eTrex 10 came into my hands - the previous owner tried to put some custom map in ruined things up, possibly formatted the storage space or something.
The device gets recognized in Garmin Express or Webupdater, boots normally, acquires satellites and shows coordinates etc, but :
- Does not update. It has v.2.90 and when I try to update to 3.60, Garmin Express reports done, but when unplugging and power cycling, nothing happens - still 2.90.
- Does not recognize GPX files put in Garmin/GPX
- Does not save waypoints or tracks - I keep getting the message "Memory full" , seems that I have more that 4-5 megs free.
All in all, the device seems to ignore or cannot find the tiny storage space.
Is there any chance of survival or should I trash it ?
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
@arkalos
Unfortunately that sounds suspiciously like physical flash damage, however you may be lucky and it's only a 'bad' re-formatting done previously. Garmin devices are quite sensitive to the way the internal memory is formatted so back up the entire visible file system and then format it using [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Copy the file system back and see how it then performs. If it won't accept a re-format it's toast.
Tried using RMPrebUSB, but there is an issue with it, I get the message "Cannot find drive", even though I see it in the application.
Drive can be formatted with Windows native format, or Rufus, tried both.
Maybe I am doing something wrong with RMPrebUSB ?
With the other tools are the formats completing successfully? I wouldn't trust windows built-in tool even with 'Perform a quick format' box unchecked. Rufus is more reliable imo. If you followed the settings in the RMPrepUSB thread's initial post and it refuses to "find" the device's internal memory even after allowing it to be selected then it may be finding problems stopping it from proceeding.
You can try to flash newer firmware in preboot mode, if that fails then it's confirmed as flash damage taken in combination with it not properly saving files written to its file system.
Yes, RUFUS completes a normal - aka slow format.
Managed also to update to version 3.60 - using preboot mode and Updater.
But still, device says "Memory full" when trying to save a waypoint and does not read external tracks / etc.

How much space is remaining on the eTrex 10?
