Have you looked @ this [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

You must do this every time you flash firmware or perform Hard Reset Clear NVRam

Maybe your Unit ID has Changed Region 41 corrupt ?? (serious problem) CatyMag can Fix this
OR Maybe your GMA files are missing (Part of Map Update)

Can Nuvi be seen by Garmin Express ?

Have you done hard reset ? Clear Nonvol [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

You can also try to flash Nuvi by SD Card

You need a different version GCD file (older or newer not same version) (Must be valid ORIGINAL (not patched) GCD file for your Nuvi)
    Rename it as GUPDATE.GCD
Place it in clean SD CARD folder /garmin
    Switch off Nuvi
    Switch on Nuvi

    It should flash.

    After you flash GarminCure3
    Switch off Nuvi
    Connect USB Cable to Computer
    Connect Nuvi to USB Cable.
The Nuvi Should do a partial Boot and Internal Drive Should be Visible.
If this does not happen Something is Wrong with the Nuvi.
Cure is used only to remove corrupt files which caused Nuvi to Not boot (Bricked) Your Nuvi is not actually bricked.

Pressing the upper right hand corner of the volume screen does not invoke the diagnostic page for me. Have tried connecting the device to 6 different computers with Garmin USB drivers installed - still won't show in explorer.

The symptoms and steps followed are same as described by [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]previously in this post.

How can I check if this Nuvi 54LM device has region 41 corrupt?

Device can be seen by Garmin Express. However it tells me I have to use Garmin Map Updater to update the maps. Try map update now (again) using Garmin Map Updater 3.3.4

Followed your instructions and cleared nonvol. Same symptoms persists.

Will attempt to do the SD card flashing method next.

Thanks for bearing with me and all the great suggestions

WE Can detect corruption in Nuvi Normally by looking at garmindevice.xml but of course you cannot get it because it is not possible to get files from Nuvi.
What I wonder is how Garmin Express is able to see your device. (Maybe it uses some other protocol)
Try to connect to Garmin Express with the SD Card Removed. Can you do updates such as Voices etc from Garmin Express ? (With the SD Removed)
Your Nuvi is Actually Not an MTP device. (It should be in Mass Storage Mode Permanently Anyway)
Can you select different voices ? (Voices are files in internal hard drive)
Can you see the SD Card as a drive in the Computer when it is in the Nuvi ?
Try to clean the USB connector on the Nuvi with some contact cleaner or similar.
I'm leaning towards a hardware fault because GarminCure3 is working very well for many thousands of users.
