You mean that you were PREVIOUSLY able to enter preboot i guess as that method can only be used in a unit which boots up.

Check you have latest Garmin USB driver installed on your PC: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

2x5W will usually go into preboot by holding the top LH corner and then plugging it into a miniUSB lead already connected directly to a REAR port of the PC [not via a hub]. Generally if you can see the start logo you can reach preboot, some units are stubborn and take dozens of attempts. Have latest firmware made as an RGN file and loaded to Updater.exe with it open and visible on your desktop. Select the radio button next to 'USB Device' before attempting preboot. Watch the window next to 'USB Device' for a few seconds after you connect the miniUSB plug and hit the enter key or click 'OK' button on the GUI immediately you see the unit details appear. Try this repeatedly. If successful in reaching preboot, you'll hear the Windows device connection bips as well as see the details in updater.exe window. You must hold the screen at least until 'Loader' or similar message appears on the unit's screen, it's best to hold it until the process finishes if you're not sure when to let go. Ensure that there is no GUPDATE.GCD file in the unit's Garmin folder and remove any SD card from the unit before proceeding.

Thanks for your elaborate response Neil.

Yes, I was able to enter preboot when the device was 100% operational (ie before I attempted the firmware upgrade based on Catymag's tutorial). It is then that the GPS got bricked.
The thing that complicated matters is that if I turn on the GPS, nothing happens. It gets stuck on the logo. If the battery has a charge, plugging on the USB also does nothing, no matter where I press on the screen.
If the battery is empty, then plugging the USB (and holding the top left or anywhere for the matter) puts the garmin directly into mass storage mode and I get it on my computer. It boots directly into mass storage. As you said, I think I got one of the stubborn units.
I'll try some more and see if my luck strikes. Thanks once more.
