Lol, thanks for that post which has me considering an urgent update of my Advanced Medical Directive 'cos i'd plumb forgotten that 2797/760 have a powered mount/cradle [seriously blonde senior moment] and therefore it's unlikely there's a problem with the device's usb socket unless you meant the flaky charging relates to when it's connected to an AC/DC charger or 5V usb from computer. So your cradle and GTM 36 are OK as shown by the display-model 760 test, therefore other than a PCB failure of course, it could be one or more of the goldplated connection pads on the device itself are simply dirty [but there still could be a failure on the board if that doesn't fix things].

Even if they look ok, clean them with a little dedicated electrical contact clearer [don't use DW-40 or similar, those products leave an oily residue]. If you don't have contact cleaner use 100% pure alcohol very sparingly but better to buy contact cleaner. Rather than spray it on directly, use it on a cotton bud/Q-tip and wipe the contacts firmly with that. If that doesn't work, try cleaning the pads very carefully with the tip of a rubber eraser.
No problem to roll back the firmware, the only back-up of it's 'state' at least partially is to dump regions but don't worry about that. The *.gcd file for a certain version is all you'll ever need. You should keep your backups of region 41 in a safe place though.
PS: Ohio in the summer's ok sometimes, nice to back in Texas i guess .....
