Oh Dear! We have a clash of sorts ... let me end it. I know PouchX's method is far more elegant and of course results in a 'fully converted' 465 with HWID 0943, and i have used it. It's probably VERY safe, i know his reputation. I didn't recommend it for smokefree because he's wanting only to try the conversion. It's much easier to 'come back to' 250/255W by retaining the HWID 0827.

So please Alviora and Giomen, have your little tiff via PM or i shall put on my Mod hat and start trashing posts. I acknowledge that the two of you have far greater firmware knowledge than i have, I admire and respect you both but won't tolerate derogatory personal opinions being expressed openly any further.

What't the difference between the two methods? I don't mind following either one. What I hope to get out of it is not so much the nüvi 456 but the learning experience. Important for me is that I have a clear view of the path to walk down: doing the necessary homework myself by reading up instructions and where necessary receive guidance that is not open to misinterpretation. As I am still a novice in the field of FW modding, I do not always know which parts of the Tutorial Section are relevant to my issue. But each day I learn more!

Imho, using the 0827 boot bin is easier and safer for laymen. Please don't do anything further if you're uncomfortable with a further conversion, but my attitude is 'wothehell'. Your unit is worth sweet-b*gger-all anyway. I can buy 255W for $20-30 depending on condition and 250W are worth even less.

There is no tut in the Tutorials Index at present for this simple conversion but it's modding '1.01'. The basic instructions you need are in Post #28 along with the necessary files, and the specific procedure is:

    1. If you have GUPDATE.GCD in your Garmin folder, remove it before doing anything
    2. Drag the rgn file onto updater.exe, select the 'USB Device' radio button and leave it visible on your desktop ready to click 'OK'
    3. To get the unit into preboot, hold the upper LH corner of the screen and plug the in the miniUSB to the unit [have the lead already connected to a rear port of the PC]
    4. Immediately your unit details appear in the USB window of updater.exe, click OK and continue to hold the screen until 'Loader' appears on the screen
    5. Let the flash finish, then enjoy your 465T.

Make sure you do the backups and reset as in Post #28 [that's essential!]. If unsure of anything, please ask.

Where's the educational part in that??

We're on exactly the same wavelength!
I'm well prepared to sacrifice this unit for the sake of a good learning experience, but am confident it will be successful.

Followed all the steps, did the backup but forgot the hard reset. Result was a bricked device (frozen on the Garmin splash screen). I unbricked it (coincidentally I picked up some unbricking experience over the weekend on a nüvi 1390, which came in handy here...) and am now back at having a nüvi 250W again with nüvi 255WT capabilities.

Before going through the process again (but this time including the reset): by hard reset, do you mean touching and holding the right lower corner of the screen while booting up?
