Thank you for your advice.
I changed the interface mode to Garmin Spanner.
Still I don't get beyond this screen unfortunately (I can select the device, therefore I presume the Pre-Boot mode is on):
Ensure device interface option is set to Garmin Spanner.
Select Setup from the Main Menu
Select System
Select Interface
Select Garmin Spanner
Answer Yes to any prompt to enter mass storage mode.

If you are trying to flash [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] to use unlocked maps with your 64? If so, you may very simply load via a patched GCD, there is not a need to flash in preboot with units that have GVS[GSV] showing as "---" in the fw_list, that's only for ones with "Yes". See [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Post #34 is also quoted in the initial post.
Spoiler: From fw_list

It took me ages to get the 2597 into preboot so I thought I'd write a few notes.
The procedure is to turn it completely off with the USB lead out at either the GPS end, or the computer end (computer end is easier) - Then (with your left hand maybe) press Power-on and keep your fingers on the top Left simultaneously and keep them pressed. After a few seconds, you will see "System" scrolling a the top - At this point quickly plug in the USB lead with your spare hand but still keep your fingers on Power+TopLeft.
(For me, it seems to be easier to keep one end always plugged into the GPS back, and to plug the lead into the computer as you are holding down the buttons.)
Now the other important bit! As soon as the device has been recognised and you see it say "Loading" on the GPS at the top where it used to say "System", remove your fingers from the power button and top left, if you don't it will just reboot or put you into calibration mode - The timing is what it's all about.
I hope this is helpful to somebody! I couldn't find a single guide for the 2597 that explained all the bits together.

I have a 2559 C4, anyway to get it into pre-boot mode? Thanks!
nuvi 2559 [C4 or not] are really no different than most nuvi models in method to reach preboot but all 2xx9 can be notoriously difficult to work with. Generic instructions are detailed in the link given above by catymag. If the unit's not bricked it's much easier to update firmware from media card or use WebUpdater etc with gupdate.gcd. If you're trying to patch firmware for unlocked maps, there's a kit for SD flashing available in this post: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. It's for both HWIDs of 25x9. Just firstly read the edit behind the spoiler and make the region change for the nonvol backup from 41 to 154 in Update.txt file.
