But if we can't dump, neither can they. They've certainly removed the rrgn command, but have they removed the function entirely? There are still instances of xrgn & ergn in v3.0 boot.bin but i haven't looked further. Is it possible they have disguised the dumping command in this fw somehow?

It looks like rrgn hanlder was completely removed, as string "Read Region" is missing.
Any chance that it's just a cock-up by Garmin? I suppose not, seeing it's also missing in v2.70. It really does seem implausible that it could be 'accidentally left out' even once, and seemingly impossible in 2 consecutive fw versions. But it still begs the question as to how they would be able to do it, surely the Garmin techs still need to dump regions and not just 41? Edit: By that i mean without downgrading to v2.30 or using a specially doctored 'service ldr.bin' with the rrgn command written into it?

I think compiling a special boot.bin with extra capabilities is not a problem at all for Garmin.
Or for you? ...

thank you for all the respond to my post. can advise whether i need to backup my region41 using 2.30 boot.bin?
will this backup region41 file created using v2.30 boot.bin still useful if i update my firmware. if yes, then maybe i will give it a try to backup this file just to play safe.
if no then no point trying.
Thanks in advance.
Neil
For anyone who has the boot.bin's source code adding rrgn is almost trivial (some programming skills are still required, alas!).
For me it's a big problem, as I don't have the source code, so have to disassemble it, find ~5 important functions and install my shims on them very carefully.

@mong736
Region 41 contains valuable information regardless of the fw version of boot.bin used to obtain it. So yes, do the NV backup. I would obtain all regions 1 to 255. Here a kit for that using v2.30 boot.bin: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Sorry, i wasn't trying to be smart. I really didn't know how hard it would be to produce such a fw outside of having garmin's source code.
