Sure you can use a mac to read/write to FAT, which in one form of another is the default file system for CF cards (and SD, SDHC etc) and more importantly is the only fs which these navi units can understand, but i don't think the last part of your statement should be definitive advice (...and Mac only) considering File Allocation Table is a M$, not a native mac, file system.
