Hello. I have an '06 Goldwing Navi that needed updating badly (2008 maps).

I have spent the morning completing both the FW update to 4.70, as well as installing CN NorthAmerica 2103.30 -- a previously purchased map product I have on my Mac, for which I have the unlock codes.

Installing the firmware update was a breeze, following instructions found on this board and thread.

Installing maps is another story. As I am running a Mac, I used Garmin's MapInstall (for the Mac) to create maps and send them to a CF card attached through a card reader via USB. I used the unlocked CN 2013.30 map set mentioned already. All seemed to go well. Three files were loaded onto the card: the map .img file, a .gma file, which I assume contains the unlock code, both in the GARMIN folder. A third file, an id.txt file, is not in the GARMIN folder but in the root directory along with the GARMIN folder. The contents of the id.txt file seemed unrelated to the .gma file.

When starting the bike, the maps loaded to 100% and then the message "Maps are locked" (or something like that) appeared. I tried creating new maps two more times, with the same result. Finally, i resorted to unlocking the maps using a utility (gimgunlock) I found elsewhere on this board. This worked like a charm.

Although I don't have the latest map set, it sure is a lot newer than what I had originally. But does anyone have any idea why MapInstall won't create unlocked maps on the card? I found this quite frustrating since I "own" an unlock code for this product already.
    Thanks for reading through this!

    Ron

    G'day gto49, welcome to GPSPower.

You haven't actually stated the history of the gmap version map's use and which unit it's unlock codes are for. You can only 'own' an unlock code for one unit. The two possible scenarios:

    • If the computer installed map was not purchased for the GW Navi and it has been unlocked for another Garmin unit then it won't be made available to any other unit even though it can be sent to a media card. That's because the unlock and gma codes are exclusively for the previous unit and so the map will not work if the card's used in a different unit.
    • If however you did unlock it in BaseCamp/MapInstall specifically for the GW Navi's UID then this may indicate that Garmin has tightened up control of using any other maps apart from those they supply on CF cards together with the firmware updates, completely regardless of the other maps being purchased legally. I think that's an unlikely possibility because of their legal responsibility to prominently warn of any such restriction, but if that's the case you may have grounds for a refund despite the length of time since purchase.

Thanks for the reply Neil, and for the welcome. I've done lots of reading here... so I thank everyone for contributing.

It's been so long since I used the maps I have (with Mapsource on an old Intel Windows box I haven't turned on in years, but still hang on to, just in case I need something), I'd forgotten about the restriction on the lock codes -- for one particular unit only as you said, and of course, it's not for the GW's navi system. Which of course, explains my situation to a 'T.' Fortunately, I was able to find a way to unlock the maps here on this forum, so I'm ahead of the game now.

Thanks again for the memory lesson.

I thought that the dumped voices pack is "unique", i.e. it doesn't come with stock EU bikes. If it does come, then you're right.
I see that HWID712 uses sys.bin instead of fw_all.bin and it's a 2009-2010 navi model. I don't know how to flash it with voices, as I don't know how to find the proper boot.bin.
Also maybe voices are present as VPM files, what do you think?

Yes, the voices pack is "unique" because it is related 1:1 to a fw that give you the possibility to switch to all of the 11 in the list. This pack is only present in the eeprom of the EU models, because an EU model can be sold in Italy or in Spain and so on, so the owner just select his own language and press OK. Voices are not available as file update but are only present in the eeprom of EU bikes. This is the reason why we need to dump this pack.

You are right. HWID 712 is mostly similar to 265 and it uses the same fw version (4.31 original and 4.5 for upgrade). It uses sys.bin instead of gupdate.gcd and I am pretty sure that this sys.bin contains its boot and fw_all. I don'know the structure of sys.bin but I will have a HWID712 navigation unit in my hands at the beginning of July. Starting from that date we will can make all we need.

This is the first try I have done last year but unfortunately fw does'nt read VPM. HWID 712 only read sys.bin from the SD like 265 & 504 read gupdate.gcd from the CF.

Can you upload that sys.bin? I used to work with GW2012 and sys.bin was just fw_all.bin. I'm pretty sure the situation is the same with HWID712.
I.e. we don't have boot.bin until we find some GCD file.
But maybe we can use boot.bin from HWID265?

HWID 0712 is US navi #2009-2010, sd type. Is this what you want?: Pharmaweb posted the HWID 0712 v2.30 sys.bin here in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Currently no, I can't do it, sorry. But I guess it's not really a big problem. In a few months, if I disassemble NV format, I would be able to do it.

We've already dumped everything. And actually the dumper was quite safe in comparison to patched fw_all.bin. It crashed numerous times but the target device is still alive.

I took a look at the sys.bin of HondaGW2009-2010 provided by ErMonter. It does support GCD files. It does support voices in regions 0x11 and 0x13. The only problem, we can't create GCD files for it, as we don't have the original boot.bin.
fw_all.bin and boot.bin of HondaGW2006-2008 most probably are not compatible with ones of HondaGW2009-2010 due to different loading addresses and RAM addresses.
So in order to flash that voice pack I need the original boot.bin, otherwise I would have to patch fw_all.bin and that's PITA.

I think we can try to run a gupdate.gcd temporarily, without flashing it, as decribed in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Gupdate doesn't exist in 2009-2010 but may be it can be read if present. What do you think about?
