If you have any other Mapsets in Your Nuvi Delete them. (Don't just deselect them, Delete them)
I've had the same problem when I have a lot of Mapsets in the Nuvi. (Real 3490LMT)
    Perform Hard Reset
From Master Volume Screen in Landscape Mode
Press Right Top Corner for 10 Seconds
    Then Clear all user Data.

You can also try holding the power switch down for more than 10 seconds for quick fix.
It will reboot the nuvi to reload map data from SD Card.

    @dasilvarsa
thank you for your prompt response. I will try both (first the quick fix) this evening while going back home. I found also that if you remove and or insert the sd while navigating, the unit show a popup saying it will reboot in 5 second to reload all the maps. Is it the same thing?

When you insert SD Nuvi reboots to verify if there are unlock codes available for maps on SD card.

    Yes Similar,
I don't yet feel comfortable in "hot docking" SD in a Nuvi.
10 second reboot is called by Garmin a "Reset" Fix for any problem Ha Ha.
I still find that a "Hard Reset" is the best for fixing Strange Problems in Nuvi as it clears NVRAM.
If you have "TRIPS" in your Nuvi copy /.System/Trips folder to Computer before Hard Reset and restore after Hard Reset and your Trips will be back.
Use Basecamp to Back up your Favourites before Hard Reset.

i tried reset (10 sec power button), hard reset, created a small map for italy, put it on the navigator internale memory, deleted the old big eu map (3gb), rebuilt it via mapsource, and this morning it did it again.

fortunately, having the small map of italy, I disabled the full eu map, one reboot, and it worked. It also works 3d buildings, and the file is on the SD ...

sorry for spamming this thread, I guess now my problem is more related to the SD card / garbage on the navigator / wrong procedure in building the eu map from mapsource/ whatever else. which is the correct thread for this?

i will try it again in 10 minutes, while going back home.

now I have an additional question:
is there a simple and idiot proof way to rebuild completely from scratch?
This navigator, originally, was not mine. Now it is, but I'm not sure if all the files in the memory are necessary or not.

I would like to delete all of them (I already did several backups, one before updating to 3490, and other later), connect to the computer, and launch webupdater, so that it will be rebuilt as "virgin" from Garmin (as 3490). I do not think this simple procedure will work, isn't it?

which is the correct procedure for this purpose?

I have rebuilt the maps, renamed, rebooted, and now it works. My current config for the maps is:
gmapbmap, gmaptz and gmapprom (380mb, with only italy) on the navigator itself (3760->3490 w/ 4gb ram + sd 8gb) and on the sd this structure:
    Directory of o:\garmin
    20/11/2012 14:48 <DIR> ASR
    20/11/2012 14:49 <DIR> SID
    20/11/2012 14:45 <DIR> JCV
    28/10/2012 14:32 588,218,368 gmap3d.img
    29/11/2012 01:31 0 gmappupdate.gsd
    28/11/2012 00:59 3,076,390,912 gmapprom full eu.img

tentative #1, to rebuild "virgin" 3490 (an upgraded 3760), but safely (keeping all the files, to recover at anytime):

    PRE: MTP mode always ON

1- attach the USB and move all the files into a newly created directory on the nav (i.e. old-3490)
2- disconnect from USB and restart the navigator; it starts in english, but using the maps on the sd card, and also having saved places still present. Magically a Garmin folder is created and an XML files is present in it.
3- connect again USB. launch webupdater and let it go. deselect unneded ASR/text/languages.
4- copied gmapbmap from the old location to the newly created .system dir
5- disconnect from the usb and let it reboot, select your preferred language, etc.
6- now in my case, I found first issue: no text and no keyboard for italian, but all the other customization were present.
7- reconnect USB, to copy keyboard and text, from the old files
8- disconnect and let it reboot.

now i have to copy some of the files copied at the end of the upgrade 3760->3490 procedure, will do it tomorrow.
the unit is working properly, with some of the feature of 3490 missing, due to missing files.

    @Luk70
if you can get the manifest.txt from a brand new EU 3490 it will have a list of all files that the unit was loaded with at the factory.
