    Default Gpsmap 296 & 396 basemap

    Hello all, posting from Portugal

After an intensive search in this good forum, I've managed to change the BASEMAP of both my GPSMAP 296 & my GPSMAP 396, from US to ATLANTIC, on yes, those VERY OLD devices without Mass Storage Mode.
I've used the Attalntik v2.0 for Garmin 66 file, the only one still available on the forum, as none of the other links work anymore.

Has anybody out there has a good source for ATLANTIC database v3.0 ?
Is anybody out there willing to share a memory region 3 DUMP from the ATLANTIC ROUTABLE HIGHWAY DATABASE v3.0 ?

    Thanks in advance.

    @CitabriaPT
To properly convert the IMG file kindly supplied by Alfiogigio into an RGN file, see this thread: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Because RGN_Tool cannot cope properly with conversion of an IMG file (renamed to a BIN file) into an RGN file, you must modify it in a Hex Editor as explained in that thread .... Or just use gfw.exe which can handle the conversion correctly.

PS & OT: Do you really own a Citabria? (Airbatic).

    Hello All

Recent updates on Atlantic Routable Highway Basemap v3

Converted the basemap file gmapbmap.img to gmapbmap.rgn using makergn.exe tool as instructed by Neil on previous post.
    Region 3 used for basemap.

Renamed the file 026001000611.rgn for Garmin GPSMAP 296
Renamed the file 040201000571.rgn for Garmin GPSMAP 396

Used updater.exe to upload each file to each GPS (same updater used to update firmware, thus the file rename) and...
SUCCESS: Now I have the ATLANTIC ROUTABLE HIGHWAY v3 on both GPS.
Now it's time to try that on my airplane, a 1969 Citabria !

    Thanks Alfiogigio, Thanks Neil.

    Hello All

Next task it to try to recover my spare Garmin GPSMAP 296 Splash Screen:

Main issues started when using xImage on a spare 296, to change the splash screen to a custom BMP of (yes!), my Citabria aircraft.

xImage quit mid-operation, I manually rebooted the 296 to find only half Splash Screen with half photo of aircraft, half blank. so I tried xImage again, with same BMP I’ve used 10 years ago, seemed to uploaded correctly, but when I reboot the 296, just a black screen shows up, no Splash anymore. retried xImage, but gives me error every time, with the correct BMP sizes (uploaded the same BMP to a 396 OK), it dowloads any screen shot OK, updates waypints images, but does not update Splash screens.
Suspect some damage was done to internal memory, or some address wrongly written and now xImage cannot access that region to write (gives erro saying image is not of correct size, BUT IT IS); If I try to READ the Splash Screen from the GPS, it freezes, only rebootable by taking the battery out.

GPS works great, boots with a blank screen, or with a blank with the text I write on settings, but no Spash Screen image.

So after some internet search I’ve ended in this GREAT forum, and really learned a lot.

Intentions now are to get my plane’s 296 home, backup/dump region 03 to have Atlantic v.1 backup, dump region 16 (hex 0x10) and try to upload the backed-up region 16, to the spare Splash-missing 296.

Any help from you guys would be highly appreciated.
I'll let you know how it went

    Regards,

Glad you've made good progress with updating the basemap to ATL v3 for your 396 and one of the 296s.

I don't trust xImage usage in modern OSs even with compatibility settings for Win XP or 7. That may just have been your problem in flashing rgn16 or it may be like you suspect, that there is some minor damage to the flash memory and rgn16 is affected.

One way to rule in or out flash damage as the culprit is to try another way of flashing rgn16 once you've dumped a good copy of the original from your other 296. If even original "known-good" logo/splash data doesn't flash properly using the alternate method, then it's pointless to try further with the modded splash containing the Citabria image. The freezing when you try to view the image isn't conclusive as it can be caused by an incompatible image file or a corrupt region or actual physical flash damage.

Let me know once you've got a copy of rgn16 from the plane's 296 and i'll guide you through the flashing procedure using Updater.exe. Also let me know which version of firmware is on the target 296 (V6.10 is the latest).

If you need any guidance using gpsdaemon to dump 16 just ask.
