Hi,
Do you really think Garmin has improved Topo Schweiz Raster map ?
Look that and try to find an explanation :
Topo v3 :
Topo v4 :
Edit : I've just understood :
v3 weights 3,2 GB.
v4 weights 2,5 GB !

Has TOPO Swiss the same fate than TOPO Austria, and the file size and quality become lower from version to version?!
Acually file size should increase with every new version because there is more Information and better quality.
I'm always skeptical when size comes down also, espeically in software/app upgrades because i've been burned before where features were removed. On a normal computer, it's usually no problem to uninstall and go back, but in the case of android/ipad, there's no way to revert. Right now, i'm stuck on a version of amazon's VOD player on the ipad that doesn't work on my device and i can't go back to the version i had. It's unusable since i get sound with no video, and it's been like this for about a month. Going by the reviews, i'm not the only one.
Occasionally, size can be reduced with better or different compression algorithms, but at this point in computing, it's highly unlikely that anyone is even working on that.
I have made a comparison between Topo Swiss v.3 and v.4
Filesize
v.3 : 367 MB
v.4 : 373 MB + 22,5 MB SQL
My impression: v.4 is slightly more detailed, but not actual. In known by me areas there is shown the situation of 2012 year, no more actual roads and buildings newer than 2012.
The v.3 shows more topo content in the border areas on french, german and austrian territory.
Filesize:
v.3 Raster : 3,21 GB
v.4 Raster : 2,44 GB
My impression: v.4 shows the same area and content like v.3, BUT in a MUCH lower resolution, as mentioned by sergio2 already.
This in a BIG step backwards, so I will use RASTER v.3 together with VECTOR v.4.
You may ask, WHY Garmin did this "update"?
I will answer, as caty usually answers in similar situations: "Garmin is Garmin!"![]()

Can't confirm that. Comparing vector maps without DB file, raw data ready for use with BC, and zipped for backup - I roughly get these values:
Topo Suisse V3: 308,000KB
Topo Suisse V4: 313,000KB
Topo Austria V3: 320,000KB
Topo Austria V4: 346,000KB
Topo TransAlp V3: 588,000KB
Topo TransAlp V4: 575,000KB
The only things I have noticed so far is that the V4's of Topo Austria and Topo TransAlp are missing bike/mtb routes, but both maps are newer! Topo Suisse V4 shows bike/mtb routes, colors have changed, but map seems to be the same, meaning I have not found any mayor differences yet.
Comparing IMG files or installers can be misleading sometimes, due to different compilers, copy protection, activation, etc.
If you want a rough 'guesstimate' about the information contained, zip the raw content because duplicate information is mostly neglected - this approach works with unobfuscated data only.
Hi, I have Oregon 600 Garmin outdoor device, I want to download TOPO Schweiz V4 PRO UnLocked Image & SQL, which one do I need to download, normal unlocked img or special unlocked img for new protected devices. eg. gpsmap 64? what difference between these two unlocked image map? Thank you very much!
You can download normal one, but patched would work fine too in O600.
Patched is for gpsmap 64
Edit: for 64 now use new gimgunlock+mapsigpatch
