I then copied the new 2014.20 files. I went ahead and named the 2014.20 map "gmapsupp.img" as that is what the old map was named. Note that I sort of recall I had deleted the original gmapprom.img and used gmapsupp as the map name several updates ago. I can't remember why I did that.

But when I booted the 765 up, I did get a message "Can't Unlock Maps". When I hit the "OK" button the unit booted up ok and when I check the installed maps in did show 2014.20 and the screen appeared top display the map OK. I tried re-booting a cpouple more times, and once again I got the "Can't Unlock Maps" message and hit OK and the map displayed properly.

So why am I getting that message and how can I get rid of it ?

There are no Unlock files on the unit and the only map on it is "Unlocked" so why does it say "Can't Unlock Maps" ?
    Due to GMA protection.

Ya... that's what I used to unlock the img. The maps DOES show up and is unlocked.... but for some reason the unit says it Can't unlock maps.... but there are no "locked" maps to "unlock".

Is there a version of this map with just Canada and USA? The full map cannot fit on my device because it is stored on a hd not sd so I cant increase storage capacity.

What device is it? If it's an old nuvi with only limited memory [some only had 256MB] you can use an SD card to place the map in a Garmin folder, named gmapsupp.img [path = sd:\Garmin\gmapsupp.img] With recent firmware for 2xx/2xxW you can have an extra map named gmapsup1.img in Garmin folder.

If you really can only have the detail map on your internal memory you can select just some needed map tiles to fit using BaseCamp and MapInstall.

It's a Kenwood DNX5140 car stereo. It is not eqipped to use a SD card, just the onboard hard drive that is of fixed size. I have about 1.6gb free after I deleted the old map and the new maps are around 1.84gb.

Thats what I'm looking for. Is it possible to remove Mexico from the full map? I've searched for tutorials but I cant find anything specific for that.

To Remove Mexico you need to download the full Mapsource (PC) installation from post #1
You can then use Mapinstall to Create a custom gmapsupp.img without Mexico.
