Interesting about the double sized CNNA from thatprogram Garmin Express, yet the individual tiles seem to have the correct size. Just another reason not to use GE imo and the weird map can be put down to yet another bug in it (still beta phase to me, i second Caty's advice not to use it).

Not explained however is the fact that the NA 3D map is shown as selectable in the unit, so if it's not present on the internal memory it must be on an inserted microSD. Do you have an sd in the unit now and when you updated the maps with GE? Check on the unit and sd for a folder named 'Map'.
