I have a 2 gb chip that replaced my proprietary Garmin memory stick. This is a chart plotter unit. I need the CNNA NT map but want to make sure it's compatible with a chart plotter (8 year old technology).

At 8 years old, probably/maybe not. Check on the Garmin site, look for your unit under 'on the water'/'discontinued' and you can check if NT maps are compatible.
