    Unhappy Garmin 60CS problems

    Hi,

I pulled out my old Garmin 60CS here today and put some batteries in it and turned it on ....... pretty screen and pages and nuthen.

Can't see bupkis not one bird, reset the unit in software, plugged in the external little square mag mount antenna, same thing after a while it says: can't see nuthen want to run off line or keep trying to acquire sats? Still nuthen so I hard reset it (hold down enter + page and power it on)

Still nuthen - brought it home and plugged it in to my Win 10 PC and see this ......... in dev manager. (see attachment) It can't see it either and mapsource says there's nothing there. Web updater same thing .......

Also, it's on board time says it SEP 01-23 for some reason ....... what am I doing wrong - it was happy last summer?

This morning I also put in fresh batts and left it outside for 9 hours in acquire mode ..... still nothing apart from it now saying it has low batteries (grin)

    Cheers'
    Dave

Themes should be given a meaningful title, with a description of the problem, not poetic freedom.

Unfortunately i can't see bupkis of your attachment either Dave. Do you mean that it can be seen or can't be seen under "GARMIN Devices" in Device Manager? Unfortunately i think you mean you can't see it in either WebUpdater, MapSource or Device Manager.

The problem of not getting a satellite fix may be either software or hardware related.

If it's software based, reloading firmware may help. However if it can't be seen in Device Manager you'll have a problem flashing it. Provided it can be seen i'd suggest to firstly re-flash it with latest available firmware version (from May 3, 2007). Extract this ZIP file to find 029101000420.rgn and updater.exe: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Connect your 60CS to the PC and check it's seen by Device Manager. Drag the RGN file onto updater.exe to open its GUI and click OK button.

The device takes current time from the satellites so it seems that it had its last good fix on Sept 1 this year .... would that be correct?

    Hi,

Nice timing ...... I was just on another forum right now when your message landed in my inbox.

It seems to be alive now !! As of 10 min ago ......

I had it outside again today for 7 hours and nothing - brought it back inside and went in to DIAG mode.

    - Diagnostic menu perhaps?
    - With it powered off hold Enter and Power it on should boot it into the Diagnostic Menu
    - Hit Page to go to the next test screen
    - Hold Power to exit the Diagnostic Menu

That worked and I took a few pics of the various diagn screens and the color test patterns for the display ...... shut it down and after 3 mins powered it back up to go jump in to the ERROR logs and when I did I saw 1 bar on the acquiring page light up !!!

It came back, so its now back outside to see if I can get the acquisition page to color up and get better than 39 meters - maybe puting the GPS in to DIAG mode kick started it !?!?! Here's the screen now ....... !!

    Cheers'

I agree that it's likely Diag mode has likely cleared something that was preventing it from getting a fix .... seems too coincidental otherwise.

However it's kinda surprising that your earlier hard reset didn't clear whatever bad data caused the problem also. Oh well, all's well that ends well. Cheers.

I guess you realize you've given something away? Maybe plug in one of the antennas on your big tower

Well .... It would be amusing but since all I have up there is a 440/2M mast and a 10-20 Mhz Mosley Jr I think I'm screwed for GPS but .....

One thing even tho .... the Mayan's used this 60CS billions of years ago ..... even when it was new tho, acquisition with the built in antenna still took twice as long as when I used this little mag mount one.

The older GA-25 one, (this one) its WAY faster for seeing and loading birds even on the old crusty 60CS. Highly suggested !!!
