Editing the XML file is pointless for such a purpose because the device re-writes it on every boot cycle as you've found.
Going by the XML text you've partially reproduced, gmaprom.img is the only detail map name that's supported in the internal memory.If I change the name to gmapprom and the working map to old or gmapsupp I can see it so the map file is ok.
Yes it does. Remove the battery, there's a microSD slot to the left of the battery compartment.the device has no memory card slot
You can also check the supported detail maps by holding the battery symbol until the hidden menu is shown. When a page headed "SW Ver" appears, press 'Next' in lower RH corner to see Version Information page then press Start Test>More to reach the Inventory page. It will show "Boot BLK; X-Loader; System; Basemap" as the first four listings then the lines between Basemap and TZMap will show the supported detail map names. Please post what is shown there.
