USB power supply for Drivesmart 61
Is there any alternative to the cigarette plug to power the auto GPS units? I only have one cigarette outlet and I need to run an inverter (which I have been told I can not use a splitter for). I figured there would be a USB to micro USB option to power it, but everything I have seen so far states that is not an option.

To be honest I think you should run a separate connection for your inverter because if you draw more than 5A (60W) from your lighter socket the car wiring will get quite warm and at full load of 16A it will melt. The Cig Lighter wiring is only rate for short term use. I do alot of Camping out in the Ozzy bush and use inverters and have dedicated cabling and batteries etc So that said that will leave your Cig lighter for your GPS.

Thank you very much for the info. That's pretty much the issue I am running into. This is a work vehicle with a desk supplied that has a built in inverter with a cigarette plug as the power source, so I need to use the only cigarette socket to power that. There are 2 separate USB ports available though, that's why I was hoping to find some way of powering the GPS from one of those.

Depending on which device you have it may be possible to use a standard miniUSB data cable from one of your vehicle's USB sockets with the following kludge:
- Hold the battery symbol of the main "Where To?/View Map" page for about 5 or 6 seconds until it shows a hidden page "SW Ver .....".
- Plug in the data cable to the device
- Exit the hidden menu
- Let the device reboot and it should stay in navigation mode
Note that if the 5v source is delivering insufficient current to both power and charge the device the above trick won't work. Some devices need 2 Amps others only 1 Amp. Also it doesn't work successfully with all Garmin devices.
You can modify a standard 5V usb cable to act like Garmin's proprietary charger at the mini plug end. It's the pinout setup which tells the device to go to Mass Storage Mode or stay in navigation mode. More info here:
Another solution might be to add an after-market ciggy socket directly to the vehicle wiring, with suitable fuse protection of course. They're inexpensive to buy in electronics or auto accessory stores and as cheap as a buck delivered from China, e.g.:Code:Please Login or Register to see the links

Thank you very much for the info...I think you are right about just adding another socket, looks like that will be the easiest solution. It seems so strange that Garmin doesn't offer a USB power option if it's possible, but beggars can't be choosers I guess.
