Garmin DEZL 770 does not show topo maps, any solution?
It's an automotive device to state the obvious. "Horses for courses" .. outdoor devices are for topo use.

Garmin DEZL 770 (HWID=2002) does not show any Unlocked Map.
You need a Firmware Patch, tomorrow morning I'll prepare for you an SD Package.
Stay tuned
![]()
These are custom SD flash kit only for:
1 - HWID 2002 devices (Dezl 770), firmware version 5.20
2 - HWID 2268 devices (Drive and DriveSmart 60-70), firmware version 5.70
Instructions:
- Download the RAR file from the Link attached then extract directly to a clean microSD formatted in FAT32 (best using WinRar to extract).
- If your device has a Firmware version lower than 5.20 (Dezl) or 5.70 (DriveSmart) all is okay, otherwise a firmware downgrade is advisable
You can download an older firmware release from here:This downgarde may be not necessary, as i forced a firmware release higher in Packages (5.21 and 5.71)Code:Please Login or Register to see the links- Ensure the device is fully OFF (not in standby), insert the card in device and power on.
- "Loader" will appear on screen for some time and the device will boot up when the flash of patched firmware is complete.
The device can reboot itsself during the process.- After the Patch is applied the device will be able to read Unlocked Maps.
- When the flash has completed remove the card, in its root will be a new file named 154.bin.
That's a backup of the device's non-volatile memory region and may save your device at a later date.
You would be best to keep a copy of it somewhere safe for as long as you have the device.- In case of flashing of a new version of the Original Firmware the Patch must be repeated, so you have not run Garmin Express with device connected as the software update first Firmware Device if any available. Do one of the following alternative ways:
Methode 1 (with device NOT connected)
- Get file GarminDevice.xml from your Device (you find it in folder \Garmin)
- Put the file in a Removable device, as an SD Memory or an USB stick (8 or 16 GB) in folder \Garmin
- Run Garmin Express, your Device will be recognized as well
- Do all the Update you want (when GE ask you to reboot device, simply secure remove your memory from PC and reinsert again)
- When Update finishes you will have ALL the files you need in the memory, simply move them into device.
- Using this Tip you have all the vantages of Garmin Express, without any problem of bricking, and you leave the Firmware release untouched
Methode 2 (with device USB connected)
- With the device connected GE copy new Firmware Update (if any available) into device and ask for reboot
- Do not remove the device (this is very important) but move GUPDATE.GCD in your PC (you find it in folder \.System)
- Patch your Firmware using Firmware Patcher. You get a file renamed as GUPDATE_Patched.GCD
This file must be renamed as GUPDATE.GCD and copied onto device overwriting the existing one- Now you can surely reboot your device. The Firmware loaded will be patched as well

All Garmin devices, including automotives, are able to manage Topo Maps.
Obviously the Outdoor models have more features and take full advantages from the characteristics of these maps, but this does not mean that the Map is not displayed.
For example, I use TrekMap Italy v5 on my smartphone without any problem with Garmin Streetpilot Android

Fair go guys, i'm not a complete novice. I didn't say that it couldn't display a topo, it just won't work like in an outdoor device and if you use one for road or highway use it'll likely eventually route you incorrectly, even dangerously. I've had one try to send me the wrong way round a roundabout, or traffic circle you fellows might call them.
A word of warning about this firmware modding now. You may notice that the Universal Firmware Patcher thread is no longer visible here. There's a good reason for that so be very careful about openly offering modifications to allow the illegal use of unlocked maps. That's why i avoided addressing his problem directly. Blind Freddy would know that dezl 770 has protected firmware.

Sorry was not suggesting you were a novice, simply correcting the impression your post may have inadvertently left for others given your status here.
Correct that topo's in Nuvi's do not have the full features they enable in my Epix or Rino's, however a good topo with embedded DEM in a suitable Nuvi such as for example the 3597 or Street Pilot on Android does provide some extra functionality such as great 3D rendering when driving in hilly or mountainous terrain which greatly assists visual navigation. And the missing functionality generally is not applicable to the driving use case anyway. E.g. gradient of the hike route etc.
And many topos such as my local Aust & NZ Topo do provide excellent full routing, including down to the level of remote 4WD track networks. Apart from some potential misrouting due to breaks in the vector data (which also can occur in CN as the regional source data for roads could be the same) I've never the last 300,000 km of touring here experienced a dangerous functional error such as your roundabout example. Nor in my travels in the European Alps on the wrong side of the road for that matter but the sample distances have considerably shorter.
That's not to say there aren't risks as clearly there are equipment and regional/data differences but the point is it's not a clear "likely" to happen and as with most things due consideration should be applied.
Cheers
How is posting Universal Firmware Patcher violates Garmin copyright? The tool wasn't created by Garmin and if any copyright needed to be enforced it should be the creator of the tool, not Garmin.
Do not PM me with questions. That's what a forum is for.
@Butters
I did not mean to say that you are a "novice", if I gave this impression I apologize.
I simply wanted to say that the Topo Maps are displayed, even if with restrictions of functionality and use also on the automotive models.
As for the Warning on publishing Patch for the Firmware, I agree with the above statement from @osiris4isis: "why should not it be allowed?"
In any case, let us decide the MOD. If this is not allowed, just delete it
