You can load the map to your device or a microSD as an .img file using MapInstall, safer to use a media card rather than load directly to the nuvi especially when you may be unsure of the PC map data's origin.
Firstly you must install the .gmap folder in the correct location, or at least in there add a shortcut link to it's present location. The correct path for Windows Vista>10 is this - C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps (in XP it's this or something like it - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps).
This will tell you how to use MapInstall: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. You don't need to use BaseCamp to invoke MI however, you can start it directly from MapInstall.exe of course.
You may need to use an unlocker to unlock the map (search google for latest version of gimgunlock) and if so you'll additionally need to use [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] to patch your 2689's firmware or you'll get a message saying mapping is corrupt or similar.
