Try to reseat ribbon cables.
This nuvi was given to me by a friend of mine.
I just want to know did white stripes on screen ([Only registered and activated users can see links. ]) are software or hardware problem?
Should I look for a good screen from a second hand nuvi or can solve problem elsewise?
All I know about the unit is that it have not been in use for 2 or 3 years.
No visible signs of accidents.

Try to reseat ribbon cables.
The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.
Albert Einstein.
If undoing and re-seating doesn't help then carefully clean both the MO and ribbon contacts with dedicated Electrical Contact Cleaner with a q-tip/cotton bud [don't use CRC or WD40 or similar]. It's almost certainly a hardware problem of some kind.

I'm afraid it's some transistors failure.
In a row on the left and top edges of the LCD screen are a series of transistors which control the on/off state of each pixel in their row or column. In the case of that screen some transistors failed, leaving all the pixels in theirs row stuck "on", thus displaying white.
PS: quite common problem in 1490

The report promised.
As Caty supposed it is not cable or connection/connector problem. Following Neil and Dasilvarsa advices I cleaned and reseated contacts but nothing changed.
Received advice from a service engineer (not Garmin service engineer) to change the screen, but taking into consideration Caty's opinion I'm doubtful did that will help.
Actually the engineers advice is good in this case. If you check Caty's reply she's saying the problem is in the LCD screen itself [the failed transistors are in an array embedded in the lcd screen at its edges]. If you decide to change the screen, salvage the digitizer from the faulty screen to keep as a spare or to sell.

You'll need the complete assembly of lcd screen and digitizer because the trannies are in the screen itself, not in the digitizer. The whole thing will cost you about US$20 or less posted depending where you buy. Your digitizer is OK, that's the outer clear part you replace if the touch isn't working [but the screen itself still displays properly] and they only cost about five bucks.
I've bought from this seller before, they're both cheap and reliable. If you are unsure email photos of your screen and they will confirm compatibility before you buy. They'll also supply a set of case tools if you ask [pretty crappy and good only for one use mostly, but free with the screen]:
I have a recollection of using a screen from a nuvi 50 with a fried mo for a 14xx too a while back. I think a few of the 5" models use the same screen, same as the 2x5W screen will fit some early 13xx but the 13xx's have 3 different screens. Best to always cross-check numbers on the actual part against the replacement offered and all good sellers will encourage you to do that before ordering.Code:Please Login or Register to see the links
