I have updated few Garmin Map Pilot cards and noticed that only firmware is updated. It's about 380MB. Map version is the same.
Version v4.x and older use 16GB SD cards. New version v5 2015-2016 use 32GB SD card. So it is not possible to update map from older version to new one based on original old SD cards. I've heard that Mercedes-Benz will sell SD cards with update. There are no way to update maps except buy
BTW: My friend has got few cards with Garmin Map Pilot: [....removed....]

One more thing
There two kind of SD cards with maps. The difference is a Telematics in navigation units.
NTG5star1 for A, B, CLA, GLA, ML, E, GL - Audio20 CD
NTG5star2 for W205, GLC, V-class - Audio 20 called Audio20 Touchpad in older versions.
