GPSMAP 551 with internal Bluechart G2, no USB only takes SD card updates, anyone know how I can update these to a newer version, but properly update them so I don't need to leave a SD card in the unit all the time.
Also anyone know how much memory this unit has?
Thanks
You have to navigate to get to the good.
Galaxy S5 Kitkat 4.4.2 / Nuvi1200->1250 / Nuvi3790T->34xx / Nuvi 2200 / Nuvi 66 / Oregon 600
Caty this links are for the firmware update.
1. First check do you have a free map update:
2. Map update of the G2 map can be purchased on an SD card:Code:Please Login or Register to see the links
Thus just order update or use an ilegal one from the Maps section but on an SD card. No other choice.Code:Please Login or Register to see the links
Thanks, I know how to update the firmware and download new updates to an SD card, but I wondered if anyone knew how to update the internal charts.
You'll see on the spec page you linked to:
"Preloaded maps Yes"
It has preloaded charts for UK & Eire, something equivalent to EU706L, that's what I want to update to a newer version, and not to have a SD card in the slot.
On a USB Garmin product, that would be easy, but don't know how to do it on this one.
They are not stored in it's RGN, but they are stored somewhere on the unit itself, so should be able to update, and then not to have to leave a SD card in it.
Just wondered if anyone had managed to do it, and/or knew how.
Thanks
You could try using or adapting the method in this thread: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], but be aware that you may cause grief to your plotter if it all goes wrong. I would think your internal memory size is maybe 4GiB as your OEM loaded chart and basemap combined size must be quite large.
I really do think your safest way is to use 'unofficial' charts on media cards and just leave the pre-loaded one alone if you don't wish to update it from Garmin.
