models and release dates

I've been looking at various models because of big sale discounts. From my research, the 30/40/50LM models are newer and also have lesser features than the 13xx, 14xx, 24xx LMT models. Am I right on this?

I'm just wondering why the prices are the same if the 30/40/50 models have fewer of the same features but cost nearly the same. Did I something that these newer models do that the others don't?

I think you are quite right. It appears that has been going on for some time.
I have an Nuvi 855 unit that has more features an add-on capability than the newer units.
The 855 has an Mp3 player, talking book capability, FM transmitter, language translation capability.
I can connect an external antenna, an audio out to connect to the aux in of my radio.
The battery even easily replaces via a slide open panel on the back.
I question the value Garmin is offering these days.

I was already leaning towards one of the 4digit models, thanks for clarifying. This will only be a gift anyways so i really don't care what it does after i hand it over. LOL

I think garmin might need to start cutting costs as margins go down. Most analysts are predicting the death of personal gps units as smartphones start to replace handhelds. For now, smartphone gps receivers suck, it's a matter of time before they catch up. If you really needed to though, for only $100, you could add a decent bluetooth gps receiver to the phone or tablet. To keep them dry and still usable, you can get a sealLine bag for $15-25. Goodbye $500 handheld gps.

Get a Samsung Galaxy S2 or S3 and you'll have a very good receiver, install iGO primo and you'll be happy with it

my cell company has been trying to push me off my grandfathered retention plan and they've recently put out an offer that I might get me to jump. A free S3 and a plan that's much better than mine is now for the same cost. I may go for it this weekend just to check out the gps now. haha. Cabelas had the Oregon 550T's for $250. I snoozed on that one too long and they're sold out of that model now, as well as several others..

Garmin already has long followed this principle. There have a ordinary soup set of Chinese mass consumption chips now.

And GPS receiver is not the main reason that smartphones start to replace handhelds. PDA with comparable Garmin cost had a good receiver earlier. But the operating system has been designed to work with a stylus and a long sequence of complicated menu. A full-size keyboard, a icon based interface and a true multitasking be found even in the cheapest devices today. In other words there is no difference in interface between a PDA and a navi handhelder.

IMHO, all comes back. A navi handhelder become a tool for professionals again. At least I'll feel uncomfortable without Garmin Navi under the right hand that always on and ready to immediate work...

P.S. About difference in cost of Nuvi 30,40,50 and 1xxx. 1xxx is has long been lying in stock. Get rid of such goods by any cost - law for any seller. Money earn only when money in move...
