I want to by a nuvi 1450 from australia will it work in america after i change maps and firmware

Just do a Hard Reset and set Region to US. As above maps will work. GPS is worldwide ;-)

GPS is worldwide but it's inferior to commercial policy.
US/EU units can display Asian maps , not for Asian jcv.
Fortunately Australian units is the same region as US/EU.
